yes don't lower both. just the wire speed. the big build up of weld you have to grind down is due to too much wire. scott my steel fabricator freind told me weld as hot as you can without blowing holes and that'll give you good penetration. a big weld sticking up means either too much wire or not enough heat. with sheetmetal you can't really make long runs of weld or you'll get distortion as you know. so even if you spot spot spot etc continuously to get a run without blowing through at least you'll get flatter welds that go right through.

cool. the extra wire now stays on the spool and not as grinding dust on the floor along with the grinding discs you'll save too.

I tend to 'pulse' weld now, weld for 1 second, stop for 1 second, weld for one second etc. Keeps heat lower and you don't go off the line.

Working out well! If the car were jacked up one side you should be able to get into it more easily. Wheels on ramps or blocks or similar to try to not put any twisting forces onto the frame / body. Got to be comfortable when welding!

When we did my roof - god it was 30 years ago!!! we just gas welded the entire gutter to the roof on the top side so the open seam became one with the roof. The beauty of gas was any rust just melted into new steel - seems to have worked as it's rust free still

Always seems to go quicker in the second half. Or maybe it's just all downhill? Don't grind to a halt!
