    a bit of this and a bit of that.

    ok i'll put any odd projects, big or small that are in the garage. at the moment there's a mk2 zephyr here for all the usual welding, a rack conversion plus whatever else he comes up with. a friend asked if we (the kids and me, lol) can do this for someone he knows. turns out i knew him too.
    the car came with a ford 351 cleveland/fmx and a narrowed jag rear. it has centreline pro stock wheels (for sale, 8.5 and 5.5 x 15's) which are to be replaced with american torque thrust II's of similar sizes. he plans to change the colour as he's not keen on the primrose yellow and the bench seats are gone now to be replaced with black leather jag' xf seats. central locking and electric windows are already planned too.
    luckily once it's welded up and steers better it's leaving me to go back home where my mate will help him finish it up.
    here's some pics after the filler has been mostly knocked/chiseled out. we've cut and cleaned the o/s of the roof ready to start making up pieces to rebuild it. i thought it best to make the roof solid before bracing the door openings and cutting the sills out (all 3 parts).

    also here is a ford 8 (same as pop?) front axle for a jag/chevy pcd disc brake conversion. at the moment we have mk2 jag uprights with hubs and discs and the ford axle complete. we're measuring up to see if bearing spacers along with some hub machining will work or if not machine the ford hubs/drums to take a disc along with a pcd change to jag/chevy. last option is machining the jag spindles (they unbolt from the upright) and ford spindles so we can fit the jag spindles to the ford uprights. this means the jag hubs and bearings will fit straight on. we did this with mgc (jag pcd also) spindles to a morris 8 axle so it it doable. i'll get some pics tomorrow hopefully if i haven't got to go last minute christmas shopping with mrs b.

    Enquiring minds, OK, my twisted one, wants to know how it's possible to do serious reconstruction of the sill area on a 2 post lift. Brilliant working height for sure, but beyond that??????? I'm hoping to learn there's a cunning trick, with no stunts!

    yup, lift it up, lower onto extra tall chassis stands . then swing arms out of the way and there's tons of room. that's the plan anyway

    just ordered some 40x3mm flat bar for banding the cortina wheels to 7". also some polyurethane for making any bushes i may need and some hard nylon for wheel centreing rings etc. no pics until it gets here, lol.

    we've been getting on with the pop/ford8 spindle to jag hub/disc/spindle conversion this week. what we ended up with is the pop spindle machined down in both size and length and the jag spindle (they are a taper fit with a locknut into the upright) machined both shorter and bored to then press and weld to the pop one. the jag oil seal surface is part of the upright so we made up 'rings' to again press and weld in place. 2 days running i've forgot to take pics so i'll do some tomorrow, promise.

    oh, and the extra tall chassis stands work in principal. where the adjustable top drops into the stands we made snug fitting 18" long tube bits with a large washer welded halfway along it. these drop into the stand with 26" tubes over them that the threaded adjustable bit now drops into. the zephyr is now on the stands both side's with with one side still supported on the 2 post's arms as well (belt and braces). there is some movement in the arms pivots so we'll be adding bracing to link the stands in pairs for more rigidity. even some angle or flat bar tacked across will do the job and will be easily removed afterwards. the 26" tubes were cut from 1 metre lengths so the remaining bits are now shorter extensions for jobs not needing as much height. waste not want not. again pics tomorrow

    it seems to be mate, wish my back would allow more time.
    anyway pics today.
    one of the spindles is now done so assembling the hub, disc and caliper next to make caliper brackets then just the other side to do. the pic shows the pop/8 spindle, the jag spindle and the combo spindle. the stock jag bearings, seats and seals are used to keep standard parts for the future.
    next pic shows the zephyr on the extra tall stands with 2 of the 4 lift arms swung out of the way for the sill surgery. we won't start any of that until the bracing's made between them.

    Ingenious adaptation of the spindle! Never actually seen that done before, but have heard of it. Should be plenty strong.

    I'm feeling rather puckered looking at that car in the air like that though! Bracing the stands together has got to help but if seems a bit crazy to me to be having the 2 poster becoming seemingly redundant after the lifting is done. I'm wondering (autocorrect put mongering in there for me, maybe it's cleverer than I give it credit for?) whether there's mileage in having the lift arms extended out towards front and rear with beams running across under the car. Simple truss fabrications in suitable box section might do it. Could be lashed to the arms, and the car, or fastened to the lift arms? A few small holes drilled/tapped into the lift arms surely can't compromise the structural integrity, but would invalidate the warranty! Hey, they could be made to work in the pad mounting holes?

    hi chris, i've done stuff much more dodgy than this in the past . i did at one point consider making 2 long channels about a foot wide with a 3" lip either side and have them bolt to the lift arms each side. then the car could be driven into the channels and lifted up (like the bed on a 4 post lift). i never got past thinking about it though

    Ha! I think we tend to get wiser, or more cautious / risk averse as we get older, don't we? Might be the accumulation of knowledge / experience, recognition that we have less ahead of us than we used to have, or the simple fact that anything seems to hurt more and takes longer to get over. Maybe we just get soft!

    My Dad was a right richard head when I was 14 but he'd wised up by the time I was 22!
