the engine's out, split from the 'box and up on my engine stand. the timing cover will be swapped as it's different and we'll pop the heads off as we have the head gasket set here from the original job. the sump will get dropped to check the shells too while it's on the stand. easy to replace them now if the engine's not as recently rebuilt as we were led to believe. i'm sure it'll be fine, i mean who ever lies when they're selling something right?

the 'new' and 'rebuilt' engine is now fully stripped. it's sort of rebuilt.... new cam and lifters, new double row timing chain set, new piston rings and big end bearings. they didn't have the crank' out or they'd have seen the bearings were just showing brass/copper. the crank' itself is nice and smooth and still within stock specs. some of the rings are stuck in their grooves from sitting. the cam' timing is a tooth out and all the exhaust valves have just kissed the pistons with one now not sealing.
so..... some good and some not so much. all easily put right and i'm glad i took it apart rather than just sticking it in on trust. i'll need to get back to the 'vendor' to see if we can get back a contribution to at least cover the parts costs.

How many times has an engine been sold as "good runner" or "freshly rebuilt" when the truth becomes evident after purchase.
I'm sure you'll get it all sorted Neil.

he said he had, yes. that'll be why there's a little mark on each piston. i know it would run, i've had diesels run a tooth out either way. they clatter a bit one way bit they run. the crank' sprocket on this double roller timing set has 3 notches to advance or retard the cam' 4 degrees but it'll go back in 'straight up'.

I wonder how far out, in degrees, a tooth is? How many teeth on the cam sprocket? 360 / that number I suppose is the answer.

Bumper sticker - This is an historic vehicle and only has three speeds....... if you don't like this one you sure as hell won't like the others.

one tooth can be either runs bad or bends valves, it depends on the lift and duration of the cam that's in there.

so that's that one down to the block now. bores got a light hone as i'll be replacing the rings too, silly not to at this stage. all nice and clean ready to rebuild. started on the heads too, one's stripped and an exhaust valve replaced from 'stock' lol. that chamber wouldn't hold white spirit. they'll get proper umbrella valve guide rubbers too, they don't have any on the exhausts and only like a dished down rubber washer on the inlets. that's about as bad as small block chevy v8's, they have an 'o' ring on each valve. like that'll stop oil running down the guides.

the parts are starting to come in so some jobs can be done. the heads have been rebuilt with proper valve guide rubbers, new rings are fitted to the pistons and the crankshaft is now back in the block. until we get the big end shells that's all that can be done. well we could sand any loose orange paint off of the block and paint it a different colour (yellow?), or even black.

big end shells arrived today so we should have it all together over the weekend ready to refit. bill dropped the rebuilt gearbox back this week so fingers crossed it should be done some time next week.

my back decided it wasn't going near any engine rebuilds over the weekend, it's a bit better today so we got the pistons and rods in the block and the heads, pushrods, timing set and rockers all refitted.

we've stripped the timing cover, waterpump, etc from the engine we took from the ute. all the gasket faces are now clean and we stripped the oil pump, replaced all the copper washers on it's fittings and packed the gears with vaseline ready for the first fire up. one 'bung/blank' was loose as it's threads were stripped in the housing, so i found a brass male female adapter with the male being tapered. some ptfe tape on it's threads and it tightened up fine followed by the bung with a new washer. last job today was to black the timing case, water pump and engine block with black smoothrite, much better.

we're getting there. we took the sd1 sump, pickup and windage tray from the old engine. then knocked the dents out of the sump, straightened the pickup and fitted the pickup and windage tray to the new engine. the sump is now painted black (see top right of pic). also the timing cover, water pump and pulley and damper/pulley are fitted so the front is all buttoned up now. the sump can go on tomorrow then turn it the right way up to fit the inlet manifold and rocker covers.

it's ready to go in now. i just have to decide whether to fit the headers and install it complete or struggle fitting them once it's in. they were an absolute bar steward to get off with the rear bolts/studs being particularly bad. i think.... try it with them fitted and see how we go, at least we can get the gaskets fitted and sealed nicely while it's out. oh, i think i've found why it overheated and did head gaskets in the first place. the silicon hose from the thermostat housing to the back of the water pump had a little split where the coolant could weep out over time when under pressure. it has a new bit of normal hose fitted now.

the engine and box are together and hanging on the crane now. the mounts, starter, trans dipstick, cooler with lines and headers are fitted. next is give the 'engine bay' a clean then swing the engine and box into the hole.
