been a while since something not nash related has happened. remember the fence we made atop the retaining wall behind my house? well we rebuilt the next retaining wall up the garden a couple of weeks ago so today it was tape measure, pen and pad time to measure up what timber etc is needed to make a matching fence on top of this wall. wickes are delivering the timber and ballast (to concrete behind the wall) tuesday and we'll collect the fixings from screwfix tomorrow. post brackets will be made here as i can't justify what 'proper' ones cost and they aren't right for me anyway. we can make ones that are spot on for fit and looks. hot rodders ay, we can't leave anything stock.

that's all 7 brackets made for the fence. 4 simple straight ones and 3 odd corner ones that'll have a 3rd fixing under the post. 2 coats of unthinned smoothrite slapped on for protection so they'll be ready to fit tomorrow.

i also forgot to mention we sat the pillar drill 'gubbins' on to it's pillar yesterday too. proper heavy old school like drill but still 240v. i bought it when we went to collect my bigger lathe. it was a 'what else do you have for sale' things, you know how it goes.

we had a busy day/evening getting the ute apart today. whoever built this wants a kick up the ar5e, why would you make a section of the 'bulkhead' sit right on top of the rocker cover each side when there's nothing there to make that needed? stupid i say. there i feel better now, lol. anyway the heads are off and it looks like the leaking gasket was the n/s where the head bolts weren't tight. almost loose more like it some of them, almost as is the builder got disturbed halfway through torqueing the bolts and forgot to finish them all afterwards. clean up tomorrow and reassembly as long as it's not too hot, then it'll probably be just refit and torque the heads in the evening.

washed the heads off in the parts washer, then cleaned all the gasket faces on them and the block. don't know what sort of sealer they'd used before but it ended up taking thinners and wire wool to get it all off. proper gooey sticky stuff it was. too hot so we called it a day.

well that all went t1ts up then. creeping up on the torque, 30 all round, then 40 on bolts 1-10, then 50 again on 1-10. when we went to 60 the problems arose, we'd not even go tto the 70 they're supposed to be. so...... 6 head bolts one side and 5 the other side pulled the threads out of the block. 2 of them already had helicoils too so they'll need timeserts or similar. worst thing is one is right at the back so the engine needs removing to sort it.

Might that explain why they were less than tight in the first place? Could that be a known (to some?) phenomenon to act as an early warning of trouble? My Rover experience is limited but without any such problem, thankfully.

F***in nightmare with rover blocks ! People don't think too chase the threads out before slapping on new gaskets and they bottom out on all the crap which doesn't help !

yep, we're looking for a good 3.5/3.9 to swap in now if anyone knows of/has one to sell.

but I do NOT use 6" wheel spacers!
the owners dropped off an engine yesterday for the ute. it's the one they'd taken out due to oil pressure issues 2 years ago. however when they got it out they realised the sender was very loose, doh! so they've asked if we can crack and retorque all the head bolts (to check the threads) and if all's ok strip and freshen it up with bearings, rings etc.
