agreed, the phrase my dad often used was ''i'm not telling you this 'cos i like the sound of my own voice'' followed by some pearls of wisdom won't be forgotten for sure. especially when i here myself saying the same things to my kids, lol. and one of our daughters has often phoned dawn to say ''i was just telling ....... (insert name of one of her boys) off and i sounded just like you''. that was from the one who used to say ''if i ever have children i won't ever treat them like you treat me'', yeah right.

just a quickie today, a mate's working on a '69 (i think) nova and is redoing the dash. he bought modern headlight and wiper switches because they'll work but the knobs were different sizes and shapes. he asked if i could do anything with them. we found a bit of ally bar from another job and set to on the lathe. first was to turn the plastic knobs down which meant cutting a pair of allen keys down so they'd serve as spindles for holding the knobs in the lathe. then turn the knobs down to the same size, make a couple of brushed ally 'cups' to cover them and drill a hole in each for future release from the switches. then mix a bit of epoxy and glue the cups over the knobs, tadaa!

    yep, they all sound familiar
moving on, well back..... to the brake job. all that's left to design (as it were) are the caliper brackets. they turned out to be very straight forward for a change. a lump of 8mm plate, some steel bar to make spacers, some m10 and m12 bolts and drills/taps to suit. we took lots of measurements from the hub and spindle before assembling it all so the other side can be matched up. that's all that's left now, repeat it all again. the spindle's already in the lathe and partly machined so it should be done tomorrow. it's a bu66er things take so long these days, but even with help from the kids my back says enough far too quickly . all that's needed after we're done here is new bearings, seals and the right bolts which is all down to my mate when he builds his T.

That's looking good fella, dig the spindle conversion.

Yep I know what its like after laying on floor of garage putting my leafs back on and trying to get back up to answer my phone. SAGA rodders take care.

we did a bit more today, all the turning's now done and the spindles are pressed together ready to be welded. the hub seal ring was done at the same time as the other side so also ready weld in place. ditto the caliper bracket spacers, which just leaves the bracket itself to cut, drill and tap. no pics, the work's the same as the other side.

    Hi Neil

Just looking at your bracket for the caliper, will that length of spacer take the sideway stress when brakes applied? cos if they do maybe I am being a bit over the top with my brackets.

    Looks good though.

Gary - what sideways stress? it's all in shear under braking.

OK, not sure what shear is but probably what I meant.

So would the spacers be man enough to take the shear it looks like a lot of leverage.

    Cheers

Something like 1" od bar with a 1/2" hole, properly squared off (lathe) and of equal length as necessary and using 1/2" bolts will be incredibly strong.

As Chris says, it will be plenty strong if done as above.
Shear - all the force is rotational around the disc, not really any sideways loading on it, if you can get a third fixing it's belt & braces but 2 bolts should be enough.

when setting it all up i'd looked at that. i decided once it's mocked back up i'll add a piece of flat bar between the spacers to make it into one piece. it'll be much stronger that way. who knows, i may get all excited and add a third spacer with a curved 'link' over the top of the kingpin, lol.

today we finished this up and yes we made a third this time threaded spacer (more of a 'tube' nut really then) and linked all three together with some flat and curved pieces of bar. last job we didn't need to do but was bugging me was one of the grease nipples was snapped off flush. we drilled it out and chased the threads on all four before assembling both sides ready for collection.
