agreed Tom, it makes some jobs so much easier. not to mention the better final product. it can be time consuming but i enjoy it myself.

Great suff with the lathe, glad you seem to have it sorted.
Onwards and upwards...
ashley popped round after work and now the new lathe is in place. we tucked the old one in between the new one and my tyre changer 'til it's sold. at least with some tidying up i can use my garage again.
first though the holden v8 and box need to be exhumed from under the racking in my other garage before next weekend as it's sold and is being collected then.

today we fitted the chuck and tailstock to the lathe and then ran a heavier supply with one of those round blue 'plugs' above it. then the led light needed moving to the left and out further above it where it's a bigger/longer machine. while doing that kind of job we ran an airline from the tyre changer round to the post where the 'shop' airline comes from. we've just fitted a male connector for now (like it'll ever get changed, lol) so it just plugs in when needed. it's a job that's needed doing ever since i bought the tyre changer but never got round to, i just dragged the shop line over to it.

Somewhat confusingly, the blue, round plugs come in 2 sizes, physically and electrically, 16a and 32a, wth 16a unsuprisingly being the physically smaller. Not being a sparky I have no idea why they would be the same colour, other than maybe voltage (240). S'pose yellow being 110v and red being 3 phase 450(?)v there might be some sense in it. But conversely, I have a 240v 3 phase polisher and bandsaw and run them off a gizmo box, and for my own convenience use the red plugs. The existence of 240v 3 phase was a strange revelation to me!

Bumper sticker - This is an historic vehicle and only has three speeds....... if you don't like this one you sure as hell won't like the others.
when we moved into dad's last workshop it was fitted with blue 3 phase 4 pin round plugs, so there seems to be no 'standard' type at all. but 3 phase is not for me, nasty shocking stuff .

forgot to say we also hung the retractable extension lead on the wall too. now we can remove all the 2m leads plugged in all round the garage, lol. we need to find somewhere for the 'new' pillar drill now, i bought it when we collected the lathe a few weeks ago. it was one of those ''while we're here, what else is for sale?'' conversations i always start.

Ha ha, that sounds so familiar Neil.

Greener options make sense to me mate, more petrol for the V8 that way

I just think for most of us, it's a case of, I've found someone selling interesting stuff, let's get all we can!
So, with your workshop upgrades done, is the Nash moving in for work......or are there some more plan changes to come first?
I may live in East London, I may have a number plate that reads "Chopt",
but I do NOT use 6" wheel spacers!
sounds about right mate.
the nash won't be started for a while yet, we're fitting a new rear wheel bearing to my daily, checking the brake pads all round and maybe even a service now i've had it a year . then we'll fit the 'new' engine to my old c-max and mot it so it can be sold on.
theennnn..... i can start the nash, assuming we don't have to stretch asley's transit chassis and make a recovery body for it first .
we'll get there soon enough, plus i don't know what else will be at the swap meet yet.........

we have to 'pop' to newton abbot in devon from home in faversham, kent next saturday. i've bought 21 8'x4'x2" polystyrene (builders call it jablite?) sheets off ebay for insulating my side shed between the house and garage. it'll be a utility room with 2nd hand upvc front doors (also bought off ebay) at each end for easier access to the back garden. then we'll knock a hole through into the hallway and fit an internal door. the sheets are £20 each new so 21 sheets for £40 plus diesel at maybe £80 are very cheap.

the swapmeet went well today. we sold plenty but bought plenty too, doh! the guy who was supposed to be bringing the tube axle for me (that i'd won on ebay) didn't turn up or answer his phone all day either. why can't people just let you know (even a text) if there's a problem. more than one person today suggested he probably sold it for more elsewhere, who knows? after thinking about it i'll turn some kingpin bosses up on my lathe and weld them to the axle tube i have in stock once cut to length. i have tube and 'rose' joints to make hairpins etc so i'm only short the transverse leaf spring and fittings that were with the one off of ebay. i collected the torque thrust wheels from john gumble (thanks mate) so i can fit all the new tyres i have here. i bought a used fe 3 bolt starter and a just in case nos windsor starter if the fe one won't work. i can just swap the mounting flange on the 'front' if needed. when home i bought the matching later flexplate off of ebay so that's that sorted.
ashley bought a pair of m/t et street tyres in a 315/60/15 size for his zephyr and then a mopar tunnel ram for his 440 from dave billadeau. he also got a pair of holley 650 vs carbs, we'll get kits and rebuild them making sure they're both jetted the same to make later tuning easier.
all in all we had a good day especially as i even had to wear sunglasses in the afternoon when the nice hot sun came out to play, unheard of for the early swapmeet!

so.... the guy with the axle replied on ebay. he was at the swapmeet but got pugged away in a corner near the carpark. he said he had no missed calls so who knows what the issue there was. anyway he's offered to post the axle at his cost if i still want it, which i do. so it all turned out good in the end.

Nice result then Neil.

we've got a quick steel wheel offset change to do. the wheels came with a different offset to what was ordered and won't go under the arches. one centre's free now and the backspace needed has been confirmed so next is setup, tack, check and fully weld assuming all's straight. to be fair having fitted tyres to and balanced a few sets of us supplied steelies it'll be hard to get the worse, they really tend to be... well..... bad.
neil.
Ouch, I'm sure you'll sort it Neil.

the first of those 10x15 steelies is now the right offset. once tacked we bolted it to one of the straight tube axles i have in stock so we could check it for trueness. it sat at 1/8" out of true which sounds a lot. then we bolted the untouched wheel on and that as expected was just over 3/16" out so we're good and it's now fully welded .
the engine swap in my old c-max has been cancelled. i thought i'd check what it'd scrap for..... best offer was £314, so i'll put the 'new' engine i bought back on ebay for the same £200 it cost me and that's over £500. compare that to £200 the car owes me, £200 for the engine, £50 for a new mot and probably £60 for a decent valet. then it'd sell for maybe £700? i don't want to get involved in a modern car engine swap for £200 so scrap it is.
on the plus side my nash gets bumped up to next in line.... woohoo!
neil.
Sound thinking Neil
