the hole where the helicoil pulled out is now almost 3/4" diameter but the number of stripped threads make it not worth doing. it has to come out even if it were fixable as at least one aren't accessible in the car. they have this other engine and have decided to get it built/freshened and swapped back in the car.

The section on the bulk head was ok when it was 1st built with its little flat head in it. Obviously when the rover went in it had issues with clearance.
Real steel
Would have been a proper fix then ....
I had rover i salvaged by having the toolmaker in work make me a 3/4 unc bolt with 1/2 unc centre tapped in ... home made helicoil for a big hole turned in amd lopped off ... ran for 3 years fine Sent from my SM-A515F using NSRA mobile app
we took the heads off of the new old engine today and cleaned the threads in the block. then we sat the heads back on and checked they would take the 70 lbft of torque. the only issue was 2 bolts (one each side) snapped off flush with the block when initially loosening them off. luckily they both drilled and unscrewed ok, then took the torque when the heads were refitted.
so we look to be full steam ahead stripping the rest down and measuring everything ready to order some new parts.

Bumper sticker - This is an historic vehicle and only has three speeds....... if you don't like this one you sure as hell won't like the others.
today we got the flip front off the ute and took it over the road for safe keeping. the 'new' engine is up on the engine build stand to be torn apart. i think that's more important than getting the 'old' one out as we can do that while waiting on parts for the 'new' one. proper project management that is, lol.
neil.
Sounds like a plan ....
so the spare engine for the ute is all apart. bores will take a hone and rings so that's ok. the crank badly needs a grind, by the scoring at least 20 thou! next i guess is pull the engine from the car and strip that to see if i can use the crank from that in this block. nothing's easy, lol. oh, and they want the gearbox out to get it rebuilt while the engine's out too.
neil.
Plenty on then !

stop press..... the owners of the ute have opted to buy a rebuilt 3.9 i've been offered. it better be good......
neil.
that's the dead one out along with the gearbox. i'll split them apart in the morning so the 'box can go for a freshen up.
neil.
today i bought the 3.9 engine for the ute, good news. maybe not so good is it's wrapped in a project car, doh! even that's not all bad as it's a gasser at least, a pb cresta shaped one. ash' can't collect it 'til the weekend after next so it's now a waiting game 'til we can move forward.
neil.
So apart from getting the Rover engine to put the Pop Ute right, you'll be doing the Cresta next then?
I may live in East London, I may have a number plate that reads "Chopt",
but I do NOT use 6" wheel spacers!
had a call on my way to gt yarmouth today. my mate john potts borrowed a trailer to move a car and said he'd also move the cresta to my house for me while he had it.
what a mate he is, thanks john
so he's saved ashley using up most of a sunday and also when i get back i can start stripping the engine out a few days sooner, win win
neil.
the sheet metal's all off of the cresta now and the engine and box are ready to lift out...... tomorrow, lol.
