Very kind words chaps.
It's a fun car for sure, and the MPG means I can afford to anywhere/everywhere in it.

I may live in East London, I may have a number plate that reads "Chopt",
but I do NOT use 6" wheel spacers!
I think that's what many people are missing out on nowadays, the fact this is all meant to be FUN!

Well, after all that work to change the rear suspension...it still feels too harsh over the bumps, front wheels go over the bump OK, but when the back wheels go over. OUCH!
This was taking the joy away.
Then I was reading about van tyres somewhere, and it triggered a memory, I put van tyres on the back of the Ruby! At the time I was out of work, and grabbed a pair of 185 14s when the price was right.
So today I got some 185 14s, Hankooks, car tyres not van tyres.
Been driving about today, and although it's never gonna be like a modern car, the new tyres have helped a bit.
Funny how we can tolerate something which isn't quite right because the newly built car is so much fun, but, as time goes on, we get to a point that we can't put up with it anymore.

Just a thought.... Have you set the shocks at their softest position? Looking at the photo of them, should be fully anticlockwise.
The springs carry the weight of the car and the shocks control how quickly they move.
Sounds like time to put softer springs on the coilovers. Do you know what poundage is in there already?
You could try adding lots of weight in the rear and if this helps you'd have a good pointer that softer springs are the thing to do.

Bumper sticker - This is an historic vehicle and only has three speeds....... if you don't like this one you sure as hell won't like the others.
I'm assuming you've been on one of the online spring calculation websites Ian?

Here's a thought for you..... Did you weigh the car at the rear including the rear axle?
You need to weigh the 'body' only as this is the part which goes up-and-down on the springs.
The axle and wheels stay on the ground, or should do...! It's a mistake that I made to start
with and then ordered another lighter set of coils which did the job.
Thanks Buffulo Bill, V8 Pop, Happydaze.
The coils at the moment are 160lb.
I've never weighed the car, wonder where I could do that?
Make sense to try and calculate, otherwise if I just keep trying different springs it's more money every guess.

Wisbech used to, suspect they still do, exchange springs if they are in saleable condition, ie not scraped up.
Public weighbridges seem to be a thing of the past! Doubt if VOSA weighing places would be very helpful, and I dunno when you could establish when they're open, element of surprise and all that! Anywhere that does prep on race or r*lly (showing my age, if you know what I mean!) cars could do it, as indeed would the most humble backyard race teams, I suspect.
Edit. Just been firtling around, and the scales are much more spendy than I think they used to be! Found somewhere on ebay up here in the North West advertising the service. No mention of price. Not far off the M6 if you were venturing to HotRods and Hills!

scrap metal yards, quarries etc have weigh bridges and will weigh your car for a small fee. they can weigh front and rear seperately if needed of course. also hgv mot brake rollers weigh each 'axle' as they drop in for their testing, i don't know if car ones can do that?
also 'normal' uprated front springs for escort mk1/2 are similar to what your rears are and the fronts have to hold engine/box weight too so yours sound too stiff to me mate.
neil.
Hi had a Riley falcon with a pinto engine box and Sierra irs. I ran 140 lbs at front and 110 on rear on 2.25 springs. Similar sized car.
