Have you trial mounted the engine and box in your car yet?
It would be very painful, if after spending all that money on a rebuild, it doesnt clear.
I may live in East London, I may have a number plate that reads "Chopt",
but I do NOT use 6" wheel spacers!

Hi ian, yeah mate, engine and gearbox mounts all tacked in as is rack and pinion mounts. Waiting for my mate to come round and weld up as he has big welder and been doing it for years. Also pretty critical bits and I can weld ok but some times best left to those who do it for a living.

Showing my age, there was an advert for a car way back and it boasted the smoothness of their engine by putting a glass of water on it.

Basically it balances the rolling mass of the rotating parts, as if the engine is running. Not static balancing.

I had mine balanced - it's solid mounted in the car and it's as smooth as my Mondeo.

Been down D and A's had nice chat with Abe about my engine. He checked all the bits and has given me good quote. So i can go on holiday tomorrow and leave it with him. Ordered some bits like pistons rings etc to go direct to him. Good prices from rockauto.

I am going for static balancing as it aint gonna be a racing engine.

    See ya

So collected block from D and A, Abe done a great job. 30thou. Bore, honed, decked, new cam bearings. Fitted new flat top pistons and weight matched with conrods, sized and honed.

New edelbrock performer cam and followers, got recond crank from states with bearings for less than a regrind here. New cloyes dual chain timing kit, full felpro gasket kit.

Now to start bolting it all together again.

Gonna get new high vol oil pump.

Found out i had a th400 gearbox instead of a 350, so sold that on a replacement on its way.

Best sort out my gas heater in the garage.

    See ya for now.

Don't get a high volume pump, a std pump is better. Get a Melling pump, smooth the entry port and if you want a bit more pressure I have a couple of the GM yellow pressure relief springs that up the pressure by approx 10 psi.

Dont a 400 need more horses to move it and more suited to a bbc? The 350 i've now got has a shift kit and been fully rebuilt, so happy. After all only going to be a street car (with maybe an odd rwyb).

At least it going to a racer, who will the most of it.

The 400 box is physically bigger and (allegedly) uses 10Bhp more to turn. It is a stronger box, but the 350 is also plenty strong enough. The 350 will be perfect for what you want.

No one said they are bad, if making serious power then they are the obvious/best option.
But for normal use in a small car they fit better as they use less space and are perfectly adequate.

There is cetainly a big difference in size now i've got them side by side.

Picked a nice deeper pan for the th350 with cooling tubes running through it to assist in fluid cooling. Will use an external cooler as well with an inline filter. The other benefit of this pan will be the tubes acting as sort of baffles to stop fluid sloshing (technical term??)about. Yep i know will add a bit of depth but ive got cleance. It appears to be stainless steel.

    Hi guys.

Hopefully in next 2-3 weeks i will be able to get back down garage and start engine rebuild, nothing done since start of Jan when missus bust her kneep cap into 3 bits on one leg and broke her ankle on the other, so been busy with domestic duties. Her cast off this week coming and leg splint week after, hopefully.

Still had some shed time on my heads, yes i know they are the smoggers that came with engine, but at mo cant run to ali heads, the 292 turbo heads i was looking were overported for my needs, may look at eddy e street heads at a later date, or see if any better heads at the swap meet. So i will build these back up with a valve lap, got new posifit valve seals and locks, cleaned the valves all good, its got hardened inserts, and allegedy would be good for 300 plus bhp with the cam and carb/intake i've got.

So now its getting warmer I'll get there or I might see if someone can assemble all my parts.

    Cheers
