Running a modern V8 with a stand alone ECU???

So I'm getting a bit ahead of myself here, thinking ahead to a possible future project.

    Could I buy a modern V8

(whatever is cheap and plentiful. Maybe a BMW V8 which can presumably run a stock BMW manual box???)

and run it with an aftermarket ECU? Using perhaps an Edelbrock carb or 8 bike carbs?

Currently Im building a car with a Ford ST170 with aftermarket ECU, this was made especially for this popular engine.
But Ive never seen any kits available for the V8s.

I have no idea how difficult it would be to get it working without a kit designed specific for the application.

I know some guys have Lexus V8s with megajolt, but these engines are not cheap anymore.

Jag V8s often come up cheap.

    All comments/suggestions/criticism/mockery welcomed.
I may live in East London, I may have a number plate that reads "Chopt",
but I do NOT use 6" wheel spacers!

you've heard of the stock ford EDIS modules that control ignition only? the EDIS 4 is the most common, but they also made EDIS 6 and 8 modules for (curiously enough) 6 and 8 cylinder engines. someone will have a simple wiring diagram for the 8 cylinder version you'd need.
    neil.
ps after a quick google search this'll do you mate https://bmwv8capri.yolasite.com/ignition-system.php

Thanks Neil, I didn't know there was an Edis 8 available.

    Makes it seem quite do-able.

Maybe when my funds are a bit better I might look for an engine and get it running before embarking on the next project. Oh yeah, have to finish the one I've started, maintain the Austin, and there jobs around the house to do also.

It's definitely an ambitious project! Running a modern V8 with an aftermarket ECU is possible, but it requires a good amount of research and tuning. Using bike carbs or an Edelbrock carb could simplify some aspects but also introduces its own challenges. The BMW V8 sounds like a good option if you can get it at a good price and if it's compatible with the manual box you plan to use. Be prepared for some custom work and troubleshooting, as V8 kits aren't as readily available as those for more common engines like the Ford ST170. Looking into forums and builds with similar setups can provide valuable insights and potential solutions. Good luck with your build!
