10 inch torque convertor on th350

    Hi Guys

I'm used to seeing much bigger TC's than this on Rover V8 and Jag etc.

So I have had a bit of a looksee and it seems that this may a high stall TC, possible 2500 to 3000, is this right?

My car is going to be around 1250kg and has a 3.75 Jag rear on 17 inch 255/55's. Is there a formula for working out what TC stall is needed.

Any idea how to identify stall of TC. Only identification found so far is 7.A.3 stamped on rim and A42 0253 on the centre bit.

It has dual bolt pattern holes.

Nick who I got the box off, did not know stall but did think it may be higher than standard.

    Cheers

    Gary

I'd say it's a good thing if it is a high, but not too high, stall converter. Fighting the car at very low, parking type, speeds is a chore as typically happens with a stocker from a heavier car, and is horrific on gravel. The high stall should drive very normally with no real downsides.

Be handy to know what it is though. If I had 2 in front of me, a stocker and a high stall, I'd fit the high stall every time.

Bumper sticker - This is an historic vehicle and only has three speeds....... if you don't like this one you sure as hell won't like the others.

i agree with all of that. i had a 10" 3000 stall convertor in my 302 powered mk3 zephyr daily driver years ago, it was fine. make sure you have a decent trans' cooler if you drive a lot with a high stall convertor as they produce more heat in the fluid due to the additional slippage.

    Cheers guys

Still none the wiser re what stall. The numbers dont come up anywhere. The fluid is really nice and clean pink. No burnt smell. Not sure if I will use it or get new, dont wanna be fitting it all only to find its no good.

Sounds like you could well have a high stall converter ( smaller) in possibly OK condition. A converter might cost as little as $240 (++) but more likely $500 (++), so you pays your money......

Not sure if you can get a converter tested. Could check out all automatic in Cannock, they certainly rebuild but suggest testing.

I have a 3000 stall in my pop, lovely to drive, still creeps a little at idle. It is a bit loose driving at lower speeds but it takes off really good

Converters are matched to camshafts normally.

Big engine in a light car = higher stall.

    A quick (rough) guide;
a 3000 stall in a 1 ton car will probably stall around 2400rpm.

I'd just fit it, it will work fine. The only downside is it will use a bit more fuel around town as it will be slipping up to approx 2000 rpm.
