Ha! All I know is that getting hit up the rear end is probably not cool!

What got me going on this was an incident at the Preston Rumble in 2024. Things got a bit messy and we were lost, in Lancaster, for quiet a distance and time. We were followed by a couple in a convertible Mustang. We stopped somewhere and said the usual " I hope you're not following us as were lost". Much merriment and comparing notes ensued. We chatted and laughed about it later and I was then told "do you know your brake lights aren't working?" A minor oh **** moment. Checked them later and they were fine, and pretty bright too. How strange! I then thought Mr Mustang would not have realised I use the brake rarely, preferring to enjoy working the gears, and hence wouldn't be braking much, certainly compared to an automatic. But Mr Mustang was driving amongst rods and yanks and would surely realised that the lights may not necessarily be as immediately obvious as a modern car. My mind later goes into overdrive; if someone who presumably 'gets it' doesn't see 'em, what's the typical distracted driver going to see??? Watching too many bad incidents on YouTube doesn't help either. So there it is. I'm a quivering wreck, scared to leave the house! Well, not quite, but I'm keen to not to make things unnecessarily precarious, says he with his red, US style rear flashers!!

Hopefully the solution will work well, not be overly hideous in appearance, and not too annoying for those behind, well, for those that matter, I don't care about the others as long as they keep away! Well see how it works out!

I can understand your worries. I nearly got hit up the rear when i indicated to go into the garage as all my lights were low down. I moved too the yank style pop set up which moves them too the eyeline a bit better and have a 3rd in the number plate light. received_3908820906018550.jpeg

    Totally Agree Chris

I have a very similar light set up on the rear of my 32. I thought the bulbs were really bright but after two incidents of watching people coming up too fast behind.. one even diving onto the pavement, I did the LED upgrade which are really dazzling

They are super bright now but I am thinking a rear window 3rd brake one would be a sensible upgrade

Well, after some messing around I got my head together, bought the bits and bobs and put it together. Had some head scratching, still have in fact got some strange issues that I won't go into, but it's working as intended! Pleased enough with the way it's turned out, and reasonably unobtrusive. Here's some pics. The lit up pic is just the brake lights in dusky light. Whilst the whole window appears to light up much of that is the relection of the sky as seen in the earlier pic.

Yeah, but the regular lights aren't so bright, even though they have led bulbs. As I think I mentioned previously the United Pacific units are 'king bright!

Forgot to mention, I bought another light unit, same as the original except for the lens being smoked, for a less obvious appearance, stealthy, sort of. The pure red lens version is burn your eyes out bright!!! I preferred the lighting performance of that one but also preferred the appearance of the smoked lens. Can't have it all!

I did a side by side comparison, but didn't take a pic.

another thing to consider adding is a black foam 'perimeter' to the lens where it goes against the glass. it'll stop lighting up the whole interior of the car. many factory cars do this so must be worth it as we all know they won't do anything that costs money if they don't have to.

Yeah, it may well come to that, but I hope not! I've not tested it in the dark yet. The lens is against the glass, but the glass slides down which might make sealing it up rather tricky, if it comes to that! I can switch it off independently if it became an issue, but that somewhat defeats the object of it being there!
