What rear axle for 300 to 350 hp motor?

    Hi all

I have jag mk2 3.54 ratio rear axle at moment fitted to the ol girl.

I think it maybe a bit weak for sbc350 with th350 giving hopefully 350ish hp.

Axle width needs to be 58inch +- an 1/2 inch.

Seen a mustang 8 inch axle almost right width anygood? Though my wheels are chevy pattern.

Chevy camaro 10bolt. Though it is 62 inches, can these be narrowed?

Also seen a belair 8.2 axle advertised right width nearly, anygood.

    Cheers Gary

    Or any suggestions are welcome.

My money is on the existing jag axle being fine. That's assuming no burnouts or attempts at drag racing. Don't put super sticky tyres on it, but why would you?

The 32 Roadster built by Bob Welstead had a live jag axle and a Chevy. Latterly owned by Howard Bolton, but that's rather old news too now. It's had many years of use. Not aware of any issues reported. Do recall it being abused one time but not prepared to go into that! No report of any issues after that though, which would have been a big issue at the time, but handy to know of it's survival in this scenario!

Bumper sticker - This is an historic vehicle and only has three speeds....... if you don't like this one you sure as hell won't like the others.

the only issue i've heard of is the keyway breaking where the wheel flange fits onto the tapered end of the halfshaft. that's solved in the same way as the same issue with having a blower driven off the damper on the crankshaft. fit a second keyway opposite the factory one. until the 1 keyway became an issue i'd leave it. scott and me fitted a mk2 jag axle to a model a truck that had a hot 400 sbc and that was fine even after extensive 'testing'

    Cheers guys

Will stick with jag axle, after a bit of websearching , it seems jag used the mk2 live axle in thrir race cars with near 300bhp.

Just thought while i am doing all this work better make axle is ok for it.
