Tim - yes, even small steps forward help us keep our enthusiasm going

    Mister Tee - Pm sent

Gold digger- I've still got the original seats in storage, just in case. I've also got a pair of MX5 seats which will be a tight squeeze to fit in, they are just 20" wide.

    Tom Marg - Thank you

Thanks Ian, yes I did know, that was just my humour. Which obviously didn't work!

Anyway, Type 9 gearbox arrived today

I've got the bellhousing for it, but need the gearstick.
Anyone got one available? Or I'll look on ebay.

The stock type 9 gear lever comes back a long way in second and fourth, and is cranked backwards,it may hit the seats, you may want to hang back on buying one until you get it mocked up.
Aftermarket ones like Neil suggested offer more options

Webasto sunroofs are much harder to get these days, this is in great condition. I'm well chuffed.

I've been taking it easy this last week due to being unwell. I usually go back out too soon and put myself back. This time I've been quite self disciplined and kept in.

I did manage another trip to my storage garage, I've now got minimum of stuff lying around here, and maximum space in my working garage to do the work.

This is how one guy moved the gear lever forward. https://www.rodsnsods.co.uk/threads/...30/post-627499

Apparently these have done a conversion moving the gear lever forward. Howard Cole Developments 01404331167

Thanks Brading, I'll check that out. On the Ruby, I simply dog legged the gear stick.

Today I turned my attention to the engine.
    It came with a flywheel

    So I cleaned it up

This week I went to Burton Power (this is a rare thing, they are expensive) and bought a bellhousing sandwich plate, £36, not too bad. Today I trimmed it to fit the zetec and filled in a gaping hole.

Next pic shows how much of the original zetec sump fouls the starter in its new position

I had done all this before on a previous project. Yes, you can buy a sump for this conversion, but why should I? Much better to cover everything in the garage with aluminium dust!

It was tighter for clearance than the last one I did (Mazda RX8 gearbox) but I got there in the end.

top tip when fitting the gearbox to the engine with the tin plate in between. centre punch the plate very close to each dowel, this pinches it to the dowel so it won't move as you offer the 'box up.

Neil, you are always full of good ideas, thanks for sharing. In this case, the plate is really tight on the dowels anyway.

When I bought the ST170 engine, there was some writing on the sump

So I got the engine onto the stand (after finding it in the loft, buried under our camping gear), ready to fit the pick up pipe when it arrives. Meanwhile I tidied up the hacked away bits of the sump.

Bumper sticker - This is an historic vehicle and only has three speeds....... if you don't like this one you sure as hell won't like the others.

Yes, the engine had been rebuilt, and I guess that when the owner moved on to some super dooper turbo zetec, they had to nick a few bits off this engine.
I'm glad they took the time to put that warning there! I probably wouldn't have bothered to check otherwise.

Also today, I whipped off the diff cover, easy little job, fit new gasket......I thought......one bolt had to be drilled out and retapped, all done now.

My old Morris 8. It started life as a 2 door but I changed that when I chopped the top. It has RV8 power.
