Interesting two sides to the story. My friends used to think it was cool and one day wanted one. They all own stuff like Audi A4s and stuff now and my best friend who used to be really into cars was actually terrified when I took him out in the Pop, despite it probably being the safest of any of my motors up to that point. That lot now say they wouldn't drive one because they'd feel unsafe, brakes, seatbelts impact zones, door bars etc etc. Yawn, excuses. I think you get like that after a while and justify not ever having bought that project to yourself. It's sad when an old passion like that dies. I guess they will be the midlife crisis car buyers.
Other people don't get it, it's the why don't you get a new car, is that legal yada yada yada and I'm forced to fire up the engine and drown them out.
Jon, the biggest safety feature is the nut on the end of the wheelIf they feel they need all that safety equipment to be on the road they must live in constant fear?
When you get older people just assume you're eccentric ! LOL

Oh yeah and I get the are you going to sell it when you finish it question all the time as well. Why would I spend years of effort and hard-earned on something just to sell it at the end?
I've bought all my rods not built them because I don't have the space, time or inclination to build another car currently and to be honest I couldn't afford to have built the car I have now. If people ask what I paid or what it's worth I'll tell them, why should't I after all it's an honest answer? Most rodders would have a reasonable idea through experience anyway but they arn't the ones who ask, it's generally pillocks who are mearly obsessed with material worth...

The general public want to hear that it's worth £80,000. Does 0-60 in 2 secs, 200mph and does 3 mpg. They're generally disappointed if they don't get the correct answers....
"How do you see out of the windscreen"...is the one I get asked the most. Only once have I replied "With my eye's" He didn't laugh. Police officer's, eh?![]()
If anyone asks me "what colour are you going to paint it?" one more time.......![]()
A common statement is "I couldn't possibly consider driving a car without central locking/electric windows/power steering/air conditioning" , which for most of "us" totally misses the point. I think you have to be a bit off mainstream to understand our cars, and perhaps that in itself adds to the attraction.
Thats why I like Cadillac's...It's amazing what you get in 1958.... mines got even more than just that...?
Power Steering
Power Brakes
Central Locking
Auto boot release and electric soft closing
Power hood
Electric Windows
Electric Quarter Windows
Automatic Headlamp Dipper
Self Seeking Radio
A/Con
Automatic Transmission
6 Way Electric seat
4 Cigarette Lighters
Air Ride Suspension
And all as standard.... That normally shocks the Mercedes drivers too![]()
Its not my mates that ask, but I get a lot of reps coming into work, often several weeks since their last visit. Then I get 'you finished that old yank yet ? Why dont you just buy a new blah blah & then you can drive it. Thats a lot of money for something that doesnt work'.
I just smile through gritted teeth & push 'em harder for another deal.
