    Speedway Double D steering UJ's

Anybody here use them? I ordered a couple from Speedway, to go with their steering column, to a Vega box, and the fit of the double D is terrible. The spline to the box is okay but the connection to the column is slack as a yak. I guess I could graunch down on the tightening screw, but the drive faces would then be angled a bit. I'm not sure if it is the UJ or the column that is at fault. I could shorten and re-machine the column end to suit the DD?

Or I might get away with slipping a piece of shimming steel in one side to get it fitting better I guess, but the price of this stuff you'd think they'd get it right first time.

I made my own intermediate shaft from 3/4 stainless with the DD slowly and carefully ground on, with plenty of use of a vernier caliper, fits luvverly.

Paul i've got some of those UJ's here and they fit the DD shaft fine so you might need to look at the column.
Any advice or help given is actually based on having done the job, not read about doing it or Googling it.

I'll pull it apart and measure up the flats on the column, see if it was a Monday morning jobbie. There is actually room to regrind it further back, without shortening the casing etc.

They don't cost that much at source, but add postage, vat, and the gubberments other pound of flesh, and the price rises a fair bit. They look the part though.

I have a feeling mine is getting close to maximum angle here. I better measure it. I believe 30 degrees is the furthest you want to go?

I think it's actually 32/3 degrees but I wouldn't want to run it right on the edge. For anyone that wants to try it's a laws of physics thing when you get down to it .Before I realised this I looked at the joint and figured it was due to clearances etc so rounded a few edges and had a joint that would turn through 45 degrees IN MY HAND. When actually installed it begins to loop around itself so causing bind.

You can prove this on the bench with a couple of extensions and a tool box u/j .Open your vice just enough for on eextension to rest in and start with the u/j straight. Start rotating and slowly increase the angle as you reach 30+ you'll see the other extension in the vice rising up of its own accord.
When that is held firm in a car that's the point that it starts to bind.

You can buy a Borgesson double joint that allows 75 degrees or movement or you can do what I did and make one from two standard ujs (very) close coupled .
