I'm pretty sure that States plates letters are NOT correct for UK legality as the stroke is the letter is incorrect .
I normally recommend Framptons but I was a little disappointed with the last set as they had been 'over pressed' resulting in the dies showing around the letters.Steve sold the company out around a year back so has lost that personal touch.

You can buy 12" x 6" black and silver plates that ARE legal . To conform with CORRECT spec the plates must use standard British motorcycle letters . State Plates do NOT comply .
You asked for legal plates and the correct sizes are listed below . These characters will fit a standard 12" x 6" plate
Legal size re exemption regs are
Character height 64 mm
Character width (except the figure 1 or letter I) 44 mm
Character stroke 10 mm
Space between characters 10 mm
Space between groups 30 mm
Top, bottom and side margins (minimum) 11 mm
Space between vertical lines 13 mm
Used to sell number plates( not numbers) for a living for 17 years![]()

The Road Vehicles ( Display of Registration Marks) (Amendment) regulations 2002 SI no. 2687 came into force in November 2002.
These amendment regulations introduce a new regulation 14A, making special provision in relation to the size and spacing of characters in the registration number of some imported vehicles. These regulations also include the display of motorcycle sizes number plates on imported vehicles. The provision only applies to vehicles imported into the UK which do not have European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval, and are so constructed, that the area available for the fixing of the registration plate precludes the display on the plate of a registration number in conformity with the requirements of regulation 14.
Also contained is an amendment to regulation 3, to prohibit the use of a number plate on which the background is patterned or textured, or gives that appearance.
Where a vehicle has been allocated a UK registration number, the number plate must comply with the specification and standards laid out in the Road Vehicles ( Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001, as amended. *Certain imported vehicles may be permitted to display numberplates with smaller characters if the vehicle does not have European Community Vehicle Type Approval and the vehicle's construction/design cannot accommodate standard size numberplates*
*The dimensions for the smaller sized plate are: *
• each character in the registration number must be 64mm high
the width of each character of the number, other than the letter 'I' and the figure '1' must be 44mm
• the width of every part of the stroke forming a character in a number must be 10mm
the spacing between any two characters within a group must be 10mm
• the vertical spacing between groups of characters must be 5mm
• the width of a margin between the number and the top and lateral sides of the numberplate must be not less than 5mm
• the space between the bottom of the number/character and the bottom of the plate must not be less than 13mm, but within that space, the space between the bottom of the number and the top of the name and postcode of the person the plate was supplied must not be less than 5mm.

There are different sizes if black/silver car plates allowable dependent on date of first registration .
In actual fact , as per my post above ,letter of the law is that the exemption only applies if there is some technical reason that a standard Brit plate cannot be fitted . In law this means this means that running small plates on ANY import is not a right only a concession where applicable . ie a 28/9 model A has no technical reason why it cannot run a full size Brit plate whereas a 60's Impala has a bumper cut out that will only accept a 12" x6" plate .
As we know in reality things work differently but if you get a copper that knows his regs then he'll know that fact.

Dependent on the age of the vehicle there are different size numerals require/available
This company is pretty good, the uppermost plates in the pic came from them.
When the import concession first came in I went to court after being pulled for small plates(motorcycle digits) on my daily Suburban. Ironically Baz it was on the way home from The Island. As Kev rightly points out the concession is only available for import vehicles which have a recess for a 12 x 6 plate. If there is a flat area on the vehicle where a normal sized British plate will mount along with illumination then the concession will not apply. The court is not bothered if you think it will make your vehicle look naff but only interested in the technical facts. If there is only a recess at one end of the vehicle then you are still allowed to run small plates at both ends. This was all gone into in some depth along with me producing photos and the decision was that as I had a factory step bumper with recess then I was legal. Many get away with States Plates generally but it only takes one eagle eyed copper and this guy was active on The Island at that time as I later found out.
iv'e used tippers i live two miles from them there quite good they will make black ally plates any size in fact any thing you want really
thanks guys for all your info ,i think i know where i am going ..lol
Always used to make me throw my hands up when someone argued that thier NUMBER was pre 73 so they were legal to have Black & silver plates... Rule says a VEHICLE first registered before 73 NOT the year THAT number first got used!!!
I know you think you believe you understood what I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what I said isn't always what I meant.
