Real steel
Almost certainly it would be a manual trans of some sort.

Bumper sticker - This is an historic vehicle and only has three speeds....... if you don't like this one you sure as hell won't like the others.
From memory, Chevy Powerglide, TH350 and older Saginaw/Muncie 4-speeds all come out at the same length, although as Chris said the manuals are physically smaller (the shifter can add a bit to the width though). I would expect the case to be similar with the other brands.

Not sure on length but a Ford c4 is small 'round' the body if you get me?
Most of the shorter popular GM auto boxes (Powerglide/TH350 etc) are around 27" long, though the shorty version of the Powerglide is around 25" long.
Ford C4s are 30"+ but the `pan fill` version is around 25".
Mopar autos are 30"+.
As said, manuals are narrower and are shorter, but add on the bellhousing and quite a few work out around 28 to 30"; S10 T5s are 25" + bellhousing.
It depends where you need to save space John; width or length!.
