    Flathead ignition upgrade

    Hi guys,
Need a little help, I've got a 51 Mercury with original v8 flathead which I want to upgrade the ignition to electronic. I've got the kit but I'm a bit confused about some wiring. There is a resistor fitted and attached to both the coil and the alternator. I need to remove the resistor to fit the flamethrower coil but there are 2 wires, one going to alternator and one to power / ignition.
I've seen a setup just on the coil which you would just remove but the other wires I'm not sure what to do with?
I'm wondering if it's anything to do with it being changed from 6v to 12 v
    Any advice?

    You've got a '51 Merc? Where's the pics?

Anyway, the Septics often used ballast resistors in the supply to the coil so that they could use 8V or 9V coils in a 12V system (to extend the points life?). So do you have a wire with resistor from the alternator to one side (+?) of the coil, then the other side to the ignition switch? I don't quite get that: normally there would be a live from the ignition 'on' side, through the ballast resistor to the coil so it runs at 8 or 9 volts, but there would also be a wire from the starter hot terminal to the same coil terminal to give it 12V only during starting. If the 8V/9V supply is from the alternator (same terminal as the main charge lead to the battery?) then how does it switch off? I think the merc would have been 6v +ve earth, so is it now 12V -ve earth?

Sorry for the late reply, I got it working okay, I basically just removed the resistor and wired it as per the instructions for the ignitor system.
Thanks for the photo Morris. I'll need to get some more up.
