    Paint code help

Anyone out there in the paint trade?

I have a PPG code 2847 that my supplier can't figure out what the mix is. Apparently this number doesn't exist on 'their system'.

    From paintref.com

    1978 ford thunderbird, dove gray, code 1N, ford code MS478, DitzlerPPG2847, Dupont 44172L, 44172A, 44172D.

I would have thought that info would be enough to get a match, do uk systems bare any relation to the US paintcodes?

Iirc ppg paint codes in the us don't match paint codes in the uk, I think the systems are completely different. Twirly(Alan) might be able to give you mor info about this though.

PPG internal colour part numbers do not cross x from US to GB, the products are different, although they may be described as the same product.
Ditzler is obselete, has been for some time, was only available in the US. The replacement product is DELTRON, available in the US and Europe. Even this product is not common any more as most cars are painted/repaired in basecoat/clearcoat and ENVIROBASE is used (water based basecoat) followed by 2K clearcoat.
Should be able to get Deltron still though at the larger suppliers in the UK.

Ford Dove Grey US, (available in the requested years) is Deltron PPG code is FRD 4N1A.

If you can,t get this product, try asking for DELFLEET which is the PPG cv product more commonly avalable in solid /non metalic colours.

Failing all that, just take a part of the car to a good supplier and they can "spectro" it, jut like B&Q or Johnson Trade Centre's

OK, quick hi-jack which I'm sure Mel won't mind

1961 Ford Falcon painted Red 4072-H and/or 93-94124-H which may be codes for Duco lacquer and Dulux enamel - I guess the same 'obsolescence' applies? Initially I plan to just get some Lechler 2k epoxy primer tinted as near to that red as possible.

Sounds like the best most simple approach. These tintable primers do have a large colour capability

Just a bit of trivia, "DULUX" has always been known as an ICI product for decorating, but the name DULUX has always belonged to Dupont and used under license.
Anyway, ICI doesn't exist any more, and DULUX decorating products are now marketed by AKZO NOBEL who also market the SIKKENS vehicle paint brands.
