forgot to say i made an offer for a pair of chedelbrock 500cfm carbs today on ebay. it wasn't a daft offer so we'll see how it goes, fingers crossed.

we got all of the run stand frame made today and the radiator mounted with top and bottom hoses. we added the front crossmember with castors as above but i wasn't happy with the engine's stability so we also put a stabiliser off of each side's engine mounting leg. that fixed it, it's solid now.next it's add a 'dashboard' so we can moniter the vitals and have an ignition switch. oh, and we'll have to fit a battery/fuel tank tray too. we're getting there though and by removing 1/2 a dozen nuts and bolts the engine build stand is back to stock and the rest breaks down to 3 seperate bits so not too bulky.

so as you know i'm frugal (read tight, lol) so on that basis i've been looking at different hydraulic roller lifters for my fe big block engine. i can buy small block ford ones for under 100 quid whereas the fe ones are 600 quid up. it seems the lifter bodies are the same but as the lifters are spaced further apart on the big block the link bars are longer too. some on fe forums have used small block ones with no issues, others say they won't work (have they tried though?) so i thought..... it's only metal so i'd cut the link bars and add the 1/4" needed to match my engine. it means i can do the roller cam conversion for about 400 quid which is not even twice the price of a stock replacement flat tappet cam and lifters.

ok so the sbf hyd' roller lifters were offered with a discount code making them 68 quid so i bought them. but then it'd be rude not to get the cam too so...... that was 299 quid with shipping (duties/taxes this end too but...) from summit so overall not bad. obviously i'll have to get pushrods to suit but hey ho the big bits are ordered. this is the cam i chose... https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-8918

had a bit more time on the run stand today. we got the gauges, ignition switch, solenoid, battery tray and clamp and fuel 'tank' tray and 'clamp' all fitted. next it's wire it all up and fit the new distributor, coil, new starter and s/h carb to the engine. we're getting there. oh and yes the jerry can's held down with a bungy strap but as it'll need to come off to fill it each time it's fine. it's nice and sturdy so....

Fire extinguisher mount ? Looks a grand job ready for years of use !!
Looks like hours of fun to be had! Kinda odd, to me anyway, that engine test stands aren't much of a 'thing' here certainly when compared to the US. I wonder why that might be? Anyway, that must be the finest radiator on a test stand, but I'm not seeing the repurposed Rally Chopper gear lever yet! Gotta have a tee handle / lever of some sort!
Chris
Bumper sticker - This is an historic vehicle and only has three speeds....... if you don't like this one you sure as hell won't like the others.
the lever is a boat one complete with cable i got off of ebay, raleigh chopper bits are too dear these days, lol.
the boat lever should allow positioning the throttle in one place while bedding in cams etc rather than holding it all the time. i'd have to check but i'm sure the cable inner is solid so we shouldn't need a return spring on the carb. like old fashioned choke cables used to be.

ps i still have to mount the clickety clack leccy fuel pump too.
i just followed up on a previous post re the clutch. i ended up ordering a full clutch kit so i could upgrade to a diaphram style pressure plate. these tend to give a lighter feel at the pedal than the stock 3 finger type. the kit from rock auto with shipping, uk duties and taxes was only ?165 so a bargain i thought. i'm finding the puzzle pieces slowly, i just need the lid off the box with the picture on so i know where they all go

a little bit more done today. we made up battery leads, fitted the new starter, charge warning light and made an adapter for the oil pressure sender. when you short across the solenoid the engine spins nice and fast so that's good. more soon.

Hope youve got a nice big fan on it.
Its coming on mate.

Gotta have fun in my old ageeven if I am a grumpy very Ol git.
less than 3 days from ordering it my clutch kit arrived from rock auto! boy they're fast
we ran out of time this week to fire up my engine so it'll be rolled into the corner for now..... to be continued, lol.
we now have a beam axle from a 'vintage' wolseley here for a disc brake conversion. provisionally the plan is discs (294mm vented), pads and 4 pot calipers intended for a subaru impreza wrx. once the drum brakes are stripped off we can take some measurements to confirm disc compatibility.
saturday ashley's picking up a mk3 zephyr for guess what..... welding, lol. then paint the engine bay before fitting the 3.0 capri engine and auto box. it already has the capri front suspension and steering so it'll drive like a big fat capri
pics soon, promise

today we got on well. the wolseley axle got clamped in the workmate and the drum brakes were stripped off. the bmw discs arrived (same jag/chevy pcd as the wolseley) so we chucked the hubs into the lathe to turn them down to match the discs centre bore. they're bolted together now and refitted to the axle ready for when the subaru wrx 4 pot calipers and brake pads arrive. then we can position those over the discs and make templates for caliper brackets which in turn get transferred to steel plate. more to come when bits arrive.

Hub centre's small enough ? i had some lovely cobra slots for my teardrop, caught me right out, luckily we had a BIG lathe in work !
yes my new/old lathe's much bigger than the last one, plus it's a 'gap bed' type where a lump of the bed at the chuck end is removeable. it gives a much bigger swing so 15" wheels are an easy fit (as long as they're not too wide). the hubs were already 'tweeked' to fit the longer 1/2" studs which may come in handy, if the calipers are too close to the wheel we can use a little spacer for clearance.
