    Well it's been a while since I did anything on Andys car, but there are still jobs to be done on it still.

    One of which is this;

    A job I'd been meaning to do for him for a long time was a new 3rd brake light/number plate light.

    We had a servicable backplate & I had a servicable cover so some repairs were done a while back but I'd not got any further.

    I spot welded the new lamp fixture into the backplate and welded up some holes - part ground back here.

    And cleaned up.

    As we don't want the red light bleeding into the number plate lamp I made a divider from some sheet steel and cut a slot for the number plate led.
    Backplate is prepped for paint here and the LED stop/tail lamp shown. Number plate festoon lamp ends have been trimmed down a bit.

    The separator plate was then welded to the backplate.

    And how it will work once built.

    The festoon LED lamp fits like this and will be fitted with some double sided 3M sponge tape for electrical insulation.

    The lamp parts were then painted with epoxy primer.

    The next night they were masked up and the insides painted in BMW silver basecoat before a couple of clearcoats were added.

    Tomorrow they can be prepped & painted on the outside with the metallic blue.

    Now tomorrow has arrived

    time for painting the outside.

    Basecoat was mixed up and laid on;

    I gave that a cook on the heater for a bit and then laid down 2 coats of clearcoat. It really is a great colour, and it has a very good metallic in it - almost like small metalflake, which you can just see here with the lamp on it, it's far glossier than the bar of light makes out - thats just glare off the lamp.

    All went really well up until I let the garage door slam which made the wooden post with the outer cover on it fall off the heater on to the floor

    Suprisingly little damage considering it was only painted 15 mins before, I'm hoping I can just touch in in with a brush tomorrow as there are only a couple of small marks on it - with luck they will disappear when its polished. if this does not work I'll have to sand it back & paint it again

    The marks are in the photo above, but not very visible with the light on it they are along the very top edge.

    The back metalwork is not perfect but it's had over 70 years of rust and life and no-one will ever see this bit.

    The rest of it looks ok though.

    I meant to borrow the clear silicone adhesive from work today - but left it on my desk, doh!

    So the glass pieces have not been bonded in tonight, I'll take the bits to work tomorrow & bond them in there instead.

    The paint got touched in and is pretty invisible, so a result there.

    Lamp is now bonded in and the wires soldered on and fed through the access holes.

    parts just waiting on glass being bonded in and they can be assembled.
