    stARTER MOTOR

    Using a Down to Earth starter motor on my 350 chevy and the pinion drive only engages nominally witht he ring gear
    It will satrt but once screeches really bad
    thinking it should be at leat half the widthn of the ring gear for proper engagementAdvice please guys

    Look up shiming the starter on a sbc.

    that'll probably sort the screeching but not the lack of engagement. you may need to seperate the motor from it's mounting plate and turn/machine the plate down where the motor bolts to it. this will move the gear closer to engagment with the ring gear. check the gear to ring gear clearance as is, you can't take off quite that much or the ring gear will be in contact cobstantly. i had to do similar on the ford fe mini starter i fitted to my anglia and have read similar fixes done on other mini starters with this problem. some even come with shims in case they're too close, mine did but as i said was too far away.

    Been a while since I have been on the forum

    Whoever assembled the engine before I bought the wagon had fitted the flex plate back to front !!!!!
    Works just fine now I have turned it around to the correct position
