'bout bleedin time, you'll take longer than me to finish it.
Found out why i had no oil pressure on tick over, AFTER changing the pump.

Wont be using an electric gauge again. Also made an OTT bracket for it today.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y3/housecraig/bracket.jpg
Got some 7W lenses and a single slot to sort for it soon but it'll have to wait as it needs a few more things for the MOT. Looking forward to just driving it again!
Looks nice Craig :)
Had mine out tonight 40 minute trip either way :D

Hi Craig,
Not spoken to you before, but I have been following your Pop for quite a while now, it's one of them things how the cars are instantly recognised, but most of the time the drivers are not.
Anyway glad you sorted the pressure problem, I did hear you might have to SORN your Pop ?? I did wonder why such a fine machine would need that, hopefully you won't have to and you will have another good summer of cruising with no probs.
The mount looks cool by the way.
I do know most of the Bristol boys as I went to So Cal with them last Oct,
Crazy bunch for sure LOL,
Cheers,

Hi Mike, Been thinking of SORNing it for the last 2 years but i always give in as soon as the sun comes out. You'll have to say hi at Billing, always good to put a face to a name.

Hi Craig,
Don't do it unless you REALLY have to, much better to use it on the street. Took mine off many years ago for a quick fix and it's still in the shop,
Keep cruising.
I'll say hi for sure,

Hi Chris long time no speak, how you doing ? how low does your pressure go down / mine is a fresh engine and it goes down to 12 psi when hot on idle, it does raise 12 psi for every 1,000 revs which is good.
Good luck with the other jobs, enjoy Drayton. I'm really looking forward to going when I get back on the road, never been yet, hopefully next year.
Cheers,
Mike C.
Saw these the other day for window switches chris
http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/VWP-onlinestore/switches/rocker.php
not a bad price either :D
Mike, hello mate, doing well thanks, how far off is the your pop now?
Re: oil pressure...
On a run when hot it'll sit at 20psi all day.Stop in traffic,it goes right down to about 2 psi,but comes back up as you set off again.Oil light will stay off.
When i drive the 15 or so miles to work its fine, but if i top up with petrol, pay,go back to car,the oil pressure is pretty much nothing and had the light come on for ages before.
Got a spare pump so gonna throw that on and try it.
cheers.
John, thanks for the link mate,i have some switches from a car we scrapped.Wanna change the leccy crap for winders....old skool.lol
Spent days modifying my doors to take jag stuff, then KevR had some standard ones for sale, best move i made :D
Oil light and Electric windows? Have you got air con as well Chris?
Sounds a lot like what i was getting. When it got warm the pressure dropped right down to almost nothing. Didn't make a difference after i changed the pump.
Craig, have you thought of running a slightly heavier oil ? whats in there now?
Flamin Black A
01-05-09, 09:06 AM
I replaced the oil pump on my rover for a high pressure one from real steal on a run mine ticks over on 25 easy it was well worth replacing
Captain Scarlet
01-05-09, 09:19 AM
When i had a Rover in my Pop i had a very small oil filter for extra clearance and found i had to change it regular as the pressure went away.
Don't forget craigs running a cologne v6 in there :)

Guilty here too :o never read anything properly, also what tool you want should also be on the top ,and that goes for clothes too ,and stuff you want should jump out of cupboards.:D
Hi John, I used to use 15w40 and change over to 10 about a week before the drags as it's thinner. When i changed the pump i used 5w30 which is what Ford advise to use as it runs more quiet. Like Ian i also use a short filter as the steering is too close for the original type. I didn't see any difference in pressure with different oils or a new filter as the gauge was playing up. Seems fine now with the 5w30 and the mechanical gauge.

If yours is a P6 Real Steel do upgraded high pressure pumps as Flamin Black A Pete says.
If SD1 good luck with new pump.
Should still rise when revs increase though.
My Pop is still a way off, although it's getting a bit closer. Most of the drive train is sorted, just trying to get the hub bearing end floats now, which are proving a tad interesting.
The body is around 60% - 70% done, just about to go to F.H.Ellis for the remainder to hopefully get it on the road later this year.
Lot's of loose ends to sort, but mainly not too far off being mobile now.
Not sure if paint, and interior will be possible this year, but an M.O.T later on should be.
Here is a link to my latest video that shows the drive train in action.

Cheers for asking,
More updates on my build soon.

LOL
Yeah i thought of a high pressure pump, but to be honest,i think it would blow all the gaskets to pieces!
Its a p6 pump i think, got a spare p6 block at work and a spare sdi engine so i have a choice what to try.
Any oil thicker than 20/50 available?
Ps. Craig...............******ks! :D
Mike,
Keep at your build mate, main thing is to get it running right and mot'd.
Interior and paint can come later, just get driving it mate! :D

Rovers run on volume not pressure, fine if it ticks over at 25lbs, but a mate fitted a igh pressure spring and had 40lbs at tick over and it leaked like a sieve !

After months of work on the Popular front (you see what i did there ) the old Achilles heel on my Pop rears its head again, the top hose area,i must have had a leak from every area and every type of set up,this time an old favourite ,those poor quality hose clips that come with those fancy stainless hose kits, had one strip again ,so i put on some JCS Hi- Grip clips from a local engineering supplies, result ,nearly ,the new clip crushed the end of the stainless pipe :D admittedly the clip was near the end of the pipe where the old clip was, which contributed to the problem.
So i can recommend JCS Hi-Grip clips,i will just go in the garage and see if the latest fix has worked.

Kin ,no ,stripped it down, the tape i used to hold the fan stat probe to the water neck two years ago, must have got disturbed when i was moving it recently, looks like another one to add to the list, putting all new rubber sleeves on while its down.

Last time i had to do this i used a bit of thin foam, i actually picked it off a double glazed units in my brother in laws place, worked out great, they use them when they stack a load of units against each other for transport, i could have a look for some if u want :)

Yesterday I did mainly break out the old sit up and beg and jolly off to the pod for the day on me todd :) and a jolly good day it was too.
I got to see Andy Robinson take the final of pro mod with a stout 230mph six second run FAAAAAAAAAA ! and the top fuel bike's were cool too running side by side 200+mph blasts down the quarter PERFICK ! just the way to celebrate another year of m.o.t ticket that I got on friday ;):D
(Dave) Xbig kiss !:o
As my Pop's straight black and unchopped, I decided it needed a visual 'lift' - something to 'lighten it up' - if you know what I mean?
So after a bit of planning I painted a Sgt. Bilko graphic on each door ... I figured the paintwork's not that special so it couldn't hurt.
I'm a bit of a Bilko fan, the car (and me) are from 1954, and Bilko first appeared on TV in 1955 so there's my tie-up.
I was hoping nobody's done a Bilko graphic before but tell me if I'm wrong
Do you get it, or is it just me?

Gotta say Tim when you turned up with those space saver's I thought GOPPIN' man but then when y'moved the centre's back they looked a lot better ;). I think the reason people ran steel's on the front in the seventies though was because they couldn't afford a full set of mag's :(. No Mike no news yet but I only told him to go ahead with it on thursday so I don't want to rush him. I see on your build thread that you built your own gearbox RESPECT well out of my league mate. Engine too, it's all I can do to pull one out and put it back never mind building the engine, I'm more into the overall look of the thing the design if y'like.
I have more or less rebuilt my car scince iv'e owned it, mine like your's had a 1600 with manual box when I bought it but I gutted it to put the V8 in and then rebuilt the floor and bulkhead in steel myself after positioning the engine well back in the car. Also had a lot of help from some good mates too. Thought I could change from 1600 to V8 in four month's but it took me six month's hard collar evenings and weekends when the wife wasn't working on her nursing shift's,one of us had to babysit the kid's while the other went to work didn't see each other for six month lol. Where did you get your trans cooler from ?

Hey John ,you can't come in the Pop bit here now !!!!!
Only joking mate :D,are you still looking for a 300e,and is that your next project ?
News on my Pop.
Well after a season of an elusive front brake problem, its time to swap the cars around and get the Pop into the operating theatre.
After a recent check i have discovered that the servo is very very slightly applying pressure to the brakes when i dont need it to,causing a dragging right front calliper.
And looking at the design/schematic layout of the Girling type 2 b servo ,when faulty it can also not let all the fluid back, causing the pistons not to retract.
Hopefully this will be a fix,but you never know ,do you

I went out to my garage this afternoon to sort out a load of stuff to take down the tip but I got side tracked and ended up starting work on my spare set of front panels that iv'e had for ages.
They are fairly good condition but need the usual repairs ie bottom corners of the wings etc etc but the bonnet !!! some tit had undersealed it and I had been putting off tackling the job because of this.
Anyhoo I spent most of the afternoon on it scraping off the goo  !
At least now the dog can see the rabbit ;) and I can start the panel repairs.

The usual splits along the front and rear edges of both halves of the bonnet need welding up and theres loads of dents all over the F'in place but i'm gonna try panel beating on em' that should be fun.

Hi all.
Haven't taken any progress pics so thought I'd verbally update as it were. Saturday was a great day for sanding down the flip front in between the rain storms! Got the wings nice and smooth now. I went home sat covered in dust! I was white from head to toe!
Still got to finish off sanding down the inside where I've glassed in the grills. Also made a bulge in the inner wings where the alternator fouled and started to sort the gap (or lack of) where the front meets the cowl. After that I'll decide whether I need to redo the o/s bead.
Also got the window wiper tube in. Man what bitch of a job. Oh well done now. I'll try and get some more pics this weekend, just gets dark too quickly.
Sounds like your making good progress mate - Nice one.

The lower arms were the best of everything i had from about 3 back ends, last year the tester noticed some play in the bottom of the hubs, so i thought the time was right to get it all sorted, i got them all tucked away just in case, but there's no play there now :D

Whooaaa - hold the press - !!!!
Can you shed some light on those bushes please, who/what/where/how much???
Is there a metal 'sleeve' that goes inside or do they pivot directly on the 5/8th bars?
Patience has been sorely tested with these bearings, quite how you're supposed to insert the bearings and 'felt' seals then try to install shims thinner than a human hair without everything falling out and dissappearing across the garage floor is beyond me:rolleyes:...
A set of these inner and outer bushes may well be a life saver!!
Nice looking Pop by the way!

Good luck,

Well done Chris 'bout bloody time lol! ;)
Had a slight water leak from the inlet manifold and with the freezing weather i decided to take it apart and sort it.
When i got the engine, one bolt was missing from the inlet, yep, the threads were damaged in the head,i cleaned it up but it never quite tightened properly and this is what caused the leak.
Today i got a heli coil kit to fix it,but the head has been repaired before which meant when i drilled/tap/inserted the new coil it didn't line up with the inlet.****.Plus i found that one of the threads on the opposite head is also ****e!
So,its either remove the head, remove the coil, weld it up and re-tap it all or just get another head, which is what im gonna do.
The good news is that i've got a complete engine coming on friday, thanks to Craig (mot man) which i actually removed when i worked for him.
Funny how things work out eh!

Here's a bit of news on mine, had a bit of a result with the brake problem that plagued the Pop last year, with the 4 pot callipers ruining close to the disc the right front (last in line) was heating up and causing the car to pull to one side when the brakes were applied,i discovered that the old Girling servo was very very slightly applying the brakes,so with a new servo (change to Lockheed design),it seems to have solved the problem.
Also the new Michael Thompson tyres seem to be performing very well (and so they should big $$$ spent) gave them a bit of a pasting up the A5 yesterday :D,they will get a bit more when i find the breaking point and the roads are a bit better.
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa202/ijarm/P1020603.jpg
Had to move my number plate back up to the top of the bumper, back to where it was ,er , a long time ago,as i started bending it up now that the front is lower, shame as i preferred it under the bumper.
One thing with the brakes now, when i press the pedal ,i get resistance, and then the pedal jumps again when the servo activates,as if it stuck or it is delayed, kind of like two staging, maybe i still have some air in the servo cylinder, anyone else have experiences with these powertune copies of the Lockheed servo,oh btw, it is a 3:1 boost ratio.

Vacuum is good and healthy.
I bought it around Oct last year Anthony,it works ,but just feels a little strange.
Was it an external air valve problem ,or an internal hydraulic problem they had,i would hate to think i got to take it off again and have to send it back :(,i got of a company trading on E Bay, down by Heathrow, maybe i should talk to them,as they sell a lot and must be aware if there are any problems.
If I'm totally honest with you Ian , I cant remember the details of it off hand , only that I had a few come back with failure second half of last year , prob within a 2 month period. I know for sure at least 1 was external air valve , which is why ya post jumped out at me , but not hundred percent on rest. as said Ill have to have a nose on Monday , but from my own experience with remote servo`s. . not necessarily power-tune , they v been a good smooth action.. ill have to scratch my head on that one. could well be worth contacting seller & even placing a post on tech pages , get some more opinions.
I hope ya get it sorted

Thanks Tony, bled the back brakes , servo outlet ,and checked the air valve, they all seem fine, drives OK,but when stationary you can feel the servo kick in under foot, starting to wonder if it could be high vacuum that is highlighting the shift from light pedal pressure to full servo mode, and as a result i can feel the servo jolting into action.
Also i was probably used to the operation of the Girling unit, which does not seem to have a two stage design.

What angle have you got it mounted at as it's supposed to have an upward tilt of about 25 degrees towards the outlet pipe. Can make it a pain to get any air out otherwise.
Re the front plate I mounted mine under the bumper on hinges so it used to flick back if it caught anything . After awhile the hinges got slightly bent and it used to stick back out of sight a lot :)

Got the servo up at the correct angle, and the air valve assy in the correct slightly off bottom position Kev,maybe i am being a bit too critical of the servo operation ,but i like it to be right, for sure the brakes are far better than last year,i called the calliper re builders everything as i thought it was their fault the right front was sticking :o
My mate has the 2:1 ratio Lockheed and you can't feel the 'step up' on that, maybe its because mine is a 3:1 you can feel it,certainly i feel the system is near its boost maximum, any more than 3:1 and i think it would be over servo assisted.
I did have mount the number plate on rubber straps ,but it looked like it would get a wobble on at speed and also hit the wing, think i might try your idea of a hinge as it would be more under control,or, i may forget to put the plate back on again after a show, a lot :D
