I transferred links on threads where each person was showing progress on their own particular build. I thought that was coming along nicely on the old forum. It is still possible to visit the old forum and cut and paste anything of special interest .

Best not moan yet Chris , many MODS have spent a 15 hour day on here watching that all is going as well as can be expected ( so may be a little tetchy !) while Doug spends yet another UNPAID day sorting out problems behind the scenes much of which was caused by last nights crash caused by those that couldn't wait to get on here ,

You let a flat tyre/tire stop you from driving? FFS, call yourself RADICAL?
Radical would have been "Faaaaaaa, look how how me fender fell off when the tyre/tire finally let go!"
Or not.
Sorry dude. Bummer.

Anyway, just 1000000000000 posts to go to catch up with the old thread!
Post pictures of The Gasser. Dare ya.

I went over to Burnham Autos last night for a bit of a bonfire party and had a nice hack back home. Came off the sliproad from the M25 to A20 at about 50 straight onto the roundabout and got a beautiful sideways slide with the car leaning right over and the tyres howling. Was planning to carry it all the way round to the lights but there was a cop car sat there. Quickly tried to make it look like I'd 'misjudged' the crossplies lol, but he didn't seem to notice.

Oy. You did all that with my PC wedged behind your passenger seat. What was it you said as you left. "It'll be alright there, it won't get thrown around too much"

Regards the fire last night, I wasn't allowed to leave for work this morning 'til I had showered, evidently I stank of burnt stuff.

Hi Radical, and Guy's,
I did respond to your request for some pictures earlier, however as I went to upload the reply I pressed the wrong button, and I lost it all FAAAAAA

Anyways, just in case you guys don't know, my Pop is many years in the making, I'm not too far off firing my motor up for the first time after mucho money has been spent on it and quite a few mods.

It is a Rover SD1 that has been balanced, it has a Hurricane cam, Holley 390 (bigger jets) Edelbrock manifold, bored 20 thou, unleaded valve seats, all new valve train, the block faces have been machined, and recon heads have been fitted, it should produce 230 bhp. I have made one good B/W 65 auto out of three doners, Iv'e had the convertor furnis brazed, and a higher stall speed built in. 95% of the engine/ g/box build has been completed in house, well in my garage actually LOL.

Wisbech have waved their magic wand on the chassis, front stainless I.F.S, loads of bodywork, and quite a few stainless items I.E Jag I.R.S hub carriers, radious rods, anti-climb rods, and much more.

The rear axle is a mixture of "S" Type, and XJ6 lots of special tools have been made for the replacement of bearings etc.
Iv'e just received my Pop Browns wiring loom, so I'm one step further towards my fire up, which hopefully will be around Christmas this year LOL (it was supposed to be last year LOL)

All the best thanks for listening, hope you enjoy the pics,
Cheers,

thanks for the replies chaps. the pictures were just a couple it took after the photo shoot. must admit iam so suprised the responce the car as achevied for some thing that was built in 7 months in a single garage with just basic tools. i think fitting the EO4A front sheet metal has made a big difference over the 103E front panels. i have fitted the new n.o.s steel boot lid today, it fits so much better than the glass one that was on it.
it will be getting a few runs down the strip next year now its handeling better and the cage is fitted. be nice to see what it can do, one thing for sure i think it will be entertaining of the line for the people watching but not for my pants. LOL
radical, come on fella you have a great gasser waiting to be finished their mate would be great to see that one on the road. or bring it down to me and let me fool around with it for a while if you want.
kev you are right fast transit and corners, must fit a diesel now and paint it white to get the full effect, LOL.

I sold a reskinned one out of Steves collection for about £80 I think .I believe it was featured in SM article about making replacements and I think he used a roof panel from something to get the double curvature.

I'm sure a cutoff boot panel and a trip to the breakers would yield a modern equivalent.

Poprodder Chris has bailed me out once again and sent me some proper fuel hose. That will be going on at the earliest available opportunity. Mark recommended a different type of fuel filter that I've got my eye on which won't cure my problem but it will make it quicker to just dive under and deal with rather than keep swapping the filters off. Can't justify a new tank really, not unless one comes up cheap.

There was a reskinned one on ebay a while back and he said he used a mk4/mk5 Fiesta bonnet as the curvature was the same. Not sure which Fiesta it was now.

Hi guys,
Yesterday I was mainly fixing my throttle cable. After quite a few attempts over many months, I have managed to get a cable that works.
I know it doesn't sound like much but it has been a real pain in the neck to get it sorted, now my pain has gone and I can move on to the next jobs, I've also made the return spring mount on the valve cover that works a treat.
To top it off the cable is blue, and it works well with my colour scheme LOL,

Hi Dave,
The pics certainly gave me some more inspiration to go in the garage on a wet and snowy day. I did fit my kick down, g/box breather, and inhibior switch, oh and I tweeked my throttle bracket and the throttle is even smoother now LOL

I didn't realise that you had previously got the SU's I'll bet that makes a load of difference.

I wish I had bought a plasma cutter for all the brackets would have saved loads of time.

i have been reading about how you lads have been making brackets for your carbs and how long they have took. i did this a few years ago and know what you meen. then i found out that pop brown does a real nice stainless steel bracket that just bolts on to your carb mounting bolts. its the nuts. you can have two types i think. one that takes a cable kick down and one that is just for the throttle only. also real steel to a excellent return spring bracket and springs for the same carb again it just bolts on it two mins. it comes with with different rated springs so you can adjust to your liking.
i have fitted these to my gasser they make a real nice and tidy job and look good aswell and dont cost the earth.

Bleeding well was shaking when I got home last night though, it was pea soup fog out in deep dark Kent then driving rain and it seemed to be uphill all the way so I had no wipers most of the way. Didn't stop me hanging the back end out a few times though, just for ****'s and kicks.

Result or what, I put the word out last night at about 5:30pm that I was looking for a fibreglass roof insert. Got home at just gone 7 and there was a message waiting for me, bloke round the corner has got one. Phoned him up, he said I'll bring it round now and before 8pm money had been spent and it was in my garage!!!

Under 2.5 hours, that's got to be a record :D

I'll do a guide how to fit it, looks pretty straightforward and it's better than the one I saw on someone else's car.

Nope, that's my one :D

I met Mike halfway between mine and his at Mark's place and we swapped the tank over on mine. Basically mine was full of crusty brown stuff and Mike's one was all nice and shiny inside so I think I'll call that an instant cure to my filter blocking issues :D

It wood work Chris.

(see what I did there?)

Yeah what you would need is either thin ply or what might be better is that flexible ABS sheet, you'd have to fix it down round the edges to pull the shape into it but it would work a treat like that and look original. That's what I thought it would be like underneath and I was quite surprised to see it's just a sheet of vinyl pulled over the hole.

I did that on my last pop, didn't have it long enough to see if it worked, was an article from the old road and custom on how to do it, thing is no mater how hard u screw it down the rain will get blown underneath it needs a good sealer like kev metioned or that faboulous stuff Chris has ;)

Jonny69
29-11-07, 05:38 PM
I did a double line of sikaflex underneath and it's got about 60 pop rivets all the way round, it ain't coming off. I'm just going to have to run more beads of goo round it. Just irritated because I thought that was finally it.

If you chopped it by 4" you could then weld a steel insert into it...
Of course you would then need...

A stroked 302
A blower
A straight tube front axle
10 spokes on spindle mounts
Magnesium Halibrands on the back
Full cage
Red tinted windows
Gold Metalflake paint...

But at least the roof wouldn't leak any more... :-)

Blackpopracing

We put loads if Tiger seal on it, sealed it real good, roof to the rubber, but I reckon it needs another layer under the rubber seal to the GRP roof section (we did not get that far yet) this should fix it.
Roof was prepped first, some rubbed down, rust treated, and whole area gone over with panel wipe to give a clean surface.
Jon, also try adding another thin bead around the roof to tidy up where we cleaned it up, using the wet finger to give a nice concave bead.
When you have sealed the rubber to the glass section I reckon it ought to be watertight.

It was bought over 12 months ago in anticipation. I just got it tested and tester says it's ok. I think what I'll do is since I need another one for the Anglia I'll get another one and chuck it on. Then if the fault surfaces again I know it's somethign else. If it doesn't, the other one goes back in a few months because it 'developed an intermittent fault'. I think it's fair since it's only had 9 months of actual use and only about 5000 miles.

Well its distinctly non pop news on here recently!! so thought I'd bring it back in line a bit, progress on mine, roof is probably finished now (unless more low spots appear when a gloss coat goes on) and gutters are nearly there, as are the door jambs.
Rear panel is as flat as a sheet of glass too :) but its a slow job, this filler work, but worth it in the end.

John make sure when you order half shafts where the drum fits on the thingy majig in the centre of the half shaft was supplied too big so drums wouldnt fit . I had a nightmare getting them to fit.If i remember i had to get them machined down.I think they come in different sizes and hauser hadnt checked i think as i left them the old ones to get match.
I remember mine where butt welded originally and i cant repeat what jeff said of these.Needless to say i saw them thrown in the bin as i left the workshop. So check before you order.
Also i ordered new studs and nuts too go with the centrelines. Race wheel nuts the ones that have have holes right down the centre end to end .The dragstrip scrutineers like to see the length of the studs and make sure they are on with lots of thread.Mine where ordered too short so check that as well mate. Oh yes i forgot no i havent got a pop!!!!!!!!! cheers mate hopefully not teaching to suck eggs if you already know mate.

Ian, on my T I'm using a Quaife ATB for that very reason. It aplies torque to the wheel with most grip but if you lose grip it then acts like a normal open drive so no sudden 90 degree turns!

Had a bit of an annoying electrical fault develop this week. Noticed it yesterday on the way to work but every time I pressed the brakes the electrics would short out according to the ammeter, so I used the brakes as little as I could on the rest of the way in :D

Couldn't find what was up at lunchtime so I disconnected the switch to make it safe. Changed the dead indicator bulb, this car seems to eat bulbs, and I noticed the front one wasn't working where one of the connectors had broken. Thought I'd better sort that so at least I had indicators with no brake lights. Brought some wire in today so I can rewire that back end, it was a bit dodgy when I originally did it but the old loom all worked so I left it.

Also got fed up with the detonation so filled up with super until I get some cooler plugs which hopefully will cure the problem rather than mask it. Interesting effects with super; not noticeable at low revs but it's down on power through the mid range, then it picks up at high revs and a lot more up at the top, presumably because there's no detonation. It's really noticeable at top speed because it accelerates up there rather than creeping up to speed. It's just that annoying dip when you go into top from second because the big jump in revs drops the engine right into the dead spot which it doesn't have so much on regular petrol.
