That was a serious eye opener, it's amazing what hideous bodges are under a bucket load of filler.

Hat's off to you sir for forging ahead and a cracking job being done to put all the wrongs right, doesn't matter who did the work but they shouldn't be allowed to be set loose building a car.

Trial fitting front new sheet metal.Wings and hood are repro, inner fenders and grill are original to car. The front and rear wings all seem to fit well with the Bob Drake running boards, though are not right with the front area and will need some work, esp the off side wing as you can see in picture (sorry about the poor quality of pictures!) also got a couple of the short headlight stands and tried the large commercial head lights on them, they just cleared by 1/4 in. I have a pair of running boards, blasted and primed that come of the car for sale, they have had some repairs but used to look good on car before, it any one would like them let me know.

I’ve followed this thread for a while now and Petes skills as a metal man are unquestionable. However, what has galvanised me to post on here is the feature in the gasser. It has all the pictures, that are in this thread, including the roof damage. There is no explanation to when this happened, but in both this thread and the feature, there is a considerable amount of information of the work carried out by the original owner (in the UK). There is no information on the history of the car after 1996 until 2003 and again from 2005 to 2009. Both this thread and the feature intimate that Dave appears to be responsible for covering up the poor condition of the roof. What needs to be considered is, if he saw all the damage, would he have left it and just put an “inch” of filler in? As the car did not have a headliner in it when it was chopped, all this would have been visible and easy to remedy. The way the roof is rippled, indicates heat. Two possibilities here, one, heat generated in trying to remove the filler by blasting. No, because the damage was already there, that’s what the filler was covering up. Second possibility, the results of “the fire” was an issue and as a quick way of repair, the roof was pulled using a screw in slide hammer (hence the worms!!). Certainly he would have not been able to fit the filler strip, above the “B” post with the roof like that, without carrying out some remedial work.
Some photos have surfaced, from the dim and distant past, of Dave in the process of chopping the roof. Remember these are over 30 years old and taken with box brownie, so the quality isn’t all it could be. But it is enough to be able to see that the damage was not there at the time the roof was chopped.

there looks to be a fair bit/thickness of filler either side of the strip being welded in on the second pic. that would indicate previous work.

Bit of an optical illusion. When you sand out to get to metal below, it's not a straight cut through to the metal, but a slope which gives the illusion of a thick coat of filler, but certainly not an "inch" thick.

From the internal shot, it is pretty evident that the roof wasn't damaged at the time. I don't see how the work could've been carried out if the roof was in such a poor state.

As Jazz said, there are some extremely wide gaps in the history of the '34 one of which included a bit of a bonfire. On that note I recall seeing photos of my old man's MK3 2000E which was burnt, it looked very similar to the photographs posted.

I'd imagine the inch thick would be in the lows of the ripples to bring the panel up to the highs. Unheard of to put that much on a level surface.

irrespective of who or how the filler got into the roof I have seen this car in Pete's workshop and they are not exaggerating, the roof was simply horrid I have never seen anything so bad. Pete however is an artist with his metal working skills and the panel work is now excellent.

Hi all, just seen posts and thought i had better get involved! firstly I do not want to upset in anyway the original builder! I am very lucky in having, Bob Drake, Howells sheet metal and countless other dealers round the world who with the help of R&R get me the parts I need, and 30 odd years ago I think the original builder did a good job with the tools and parts he had! We have spoken a couple of times and he has sat in the car under my ownership. The history of the car is not sketchy at all! I know where the car has been and all owners prior to me, indeed I speak with some of them at times. I was asked by N Nick if he could write a piece for the Gasser mag and I said it would be ok as its fun to see whats going on in Rodders garages. He wrote the article using pics from the thread here. The car has never been involved in a fire and there is no damage by fire to the car. The second owner had a fire at his house but the car was not directly involved.I love the three pics that have been posted, they are the first pics I have seen of car being built by original builder. The middle picture showing car being worked on made me smile as I have that part of the car cut out and hanging in my garage! I also have or Pete the builder of car now has all the original metal that was cut out of car. when the car was blasted they left lumps of filler 0n car so I could see how deep filler was, I have those parts as well and it is an inch thick in some areas. When car was blasted I have to say the damage did not look half so bad from the inside(lots of pics of the inside as well)Peter is doing a fantastic job of car and after many years (I have had car for around 7 yrs) its looking like an end is in sight! I love the car and did so the first time I saw it at Garys picnic in around 82. When car is finished the original builder will be welcome to take it for a spin! and I will welcome his opinion. One of his mates has been to Petes and has seen car and has liked what he saw. On a lighter note, im going to see car tomorrow to sort seat position, steering etc. P.S thanks Jimmy the pump!

You're absolutely right in what you say, but when you say "irrespective of who or how the filler got into the roof" it is the intimation that Dave was responsible, both in this thread and the feature. There were at least 4 custodians of this car after Dave, but nothing is mentioned about them.

Don't think you'll do that, he lives or lived in Washington State, hope he's still around!!
Perhaps you mean Dave, he does have name!!

    Bit condescending, don't you think?

Cool thing to do, but neither of you thought to have the courtesy to call Dave and ask him if it was ok to include him, but funnily enough not to include any of the other owners through the years?
