    Budget POP build

In recent years I got seduced by the americanised side of the hobby and drifted from the roots of UK hot rodding , so when the chance came up to buy the remains of an old POP I gave a friend a hand with over 40 years ago I jumped in with both feet .

The car was chopped and channeled and built on a Jago chassis . When we did it it was fitted with a 2 litre OHC, Vitesse front and Anglia rear . It never got finished was sold on a number of times and ended up 3 miles from me .

With it planted in the shed for a year or so I decided to give it a closer look. Long story short , it was pretty clear I had my super rose tinted fantasy goggles on that day . Itdid remind me though that we all had to start somewhere I was still a bit smitten with it but after a good hard look it was obvious that what I had would be a big ask to get to where I wanted it to be .

As luck would have it an Anglia rolling shell appeared on Ebay that was fairly local and for ?200 it was a bargain, even though it was missing its doors and front sheet metal , glass and anything else that might have been bolted or screwed to it . Shell was solid though .

The Jago chassis was given a good looking at . Through time the 2 litre had been ditched and Rover V8 had been fitted , although it didn't come with the purchase just a big hole where it had been . The rear axle was also changed from Anglia to Jag and realy badly fitted .. but in there .

A few other mods had been made to the frame over time and it was decided that it would be easier to start from scratch and build a new frams to suit the parts choice and more modern stance , So the chassis was sold , the original chopped shell was chopped up , the jag rear was stripped for storage

For the last year Ive been busy off and on working away on the project . The focus is to build the car based on the stuff we had available easily when we were nippers , looking up to the fellas that were customising all sorts of Brittish tin, but without the nose bleed stance of the stuff built back then..and do it all is cheap as possible .

The latter involved a fairly tight budget that might not be realistic but its the aim. Lots of the stuff that was available back then is now harder to find so the occasional spend has been necessary . Budget is flexible but 5k is the target. Im not there yet but here is where I have got to so far .

To add to the mix, I decided to build it to IVA spec . and see if I can get it through the test . Its one of those things I always dug my heels in with but always accepted that it was the future and suddenly here we are . Its an interesting challenge but to be honest, so far its not been any different to a standard build just a bit of head scratching. but plenty info out there .

Unfortunately after a computer meltdown I lost some of the early pics of the car so the pic dump starts a little into the project .

I used the Jago chassis as a sort of base / jig to set up the new frame , its all pretty basic . The front suspension is based around the Vitesse parts that were on the Jago, the subframe was scratch build on a narrowed footprint .

the central part of the front X member was made from flat steel . I doubled up leaving a gap between the front and rear section to allow the Rover oil punp a place to live without setting the engine either to far back or to far forward . The double X member also adds a fair bit of strength .

It might look a bit wierd but it serves a purpose .

lets the engine sit in a decent position nice and low and no issues with the pump location

Vitesse steering rack narrowed to suit , most expensive part of this operation was the die nut , Bought a decent one as the chinese stuff seems to rip threads .

Jag rear in the pics isnt the one that came with the chassis . I was in the process of narrowing the original when in conversation I was offered this one for ?165 . It would have been nuts to knock it back and being a budget build it was a great find and a very generous price .

It turned out that it had originally been fitted to a POP and was in the ball park width I was looking for . Its not quite as narrow as I intended but for the price and the time saved I can live with it .

The next stage was dropping the new body on the chassis and sorting out some of the sheet metal work. I had scored a decent looking Rover V8 and auto box from a friend. Unfortunately it turned out that the engine had got water in it at some point and was partially seized and turned out to be mostly scrap , but no worries , It served its purpose allowing me to get things mounted .

Floor and bulkhead were the aim but I ended up taking it a wee bit further . The new body wasn't devoid of rust and the rear inner arches needed some attention. It was decided to cut everything out and build with fresh steel soo......

Cheap E bay find body dropped on the frame to check the fit . Bit of pallaver but with a bit of adjustable supports and a lot of measuring, head scratching and swearing it went on. Fortunately I had by this time found a pair of doors that weirdly matched the wear and paint repair patterns on the main shell !!!

The floors are all pretty much sorted with just a few in fills to tie everything to the original shell .

That moved things forward enough to think about seats , seating position, seat belts , steering Pedals , park brake , and shifter .

Seats came from a Mazda MX5 narrow enough for the POP with enough space to be comfy. and in decent enough condition to be used as is , ( there is a budget to consider )

Steering is a bit of a mish mash of what I had in the shed , Top part is Capri Mk3 as it had the collapsible neck on the wheel , plus all the relevant switches on the Ford stalks . that's 2 birds knocked off in one hit for the IVA and it was cheap. . The mid section of the column was Mazda . I used that as I had a new UJ with a mazda spline and a 3/4 DD , the forward section is a length of DD via another UJ to the rack . Loads of clearance and ticks all the boxes for IVA. for very little outlay.

had a bit of a hicup posting pics but back to have another go .I'm missing loads of stuff out to get to the state of play today and will maintain updates from there .

With the seat mounted temporarily at a comfortable height I made a temporary bracket to hold the pedal assembly . Opted for a Willwood and dual master cylinders . Throttle pedal came from a mazda ( can you tell there was a mazda broken for parts at some point ) With the pedals located and the seating position satisfactory , the steering was mocked into position before a couple of brackets were made to secure it to a box section framework behind the dash .

The framework also supports the brackets for the demister unit and the wiper motor .

The park brake was an old unit I had in the loft , made a couple of brackets to mount it and bought a plasic grip and boot to dress it up..

Keen to locate everything at this stage I splashed out on a wire loom and found a suitable location on the bulkhead and run the loom to check the circuits for a tidy run .
Followed this with the purchase of a Knock off locar style shifter . It came off ebay for ?120 swapped the shifter knob for a vintage one and converted the shifter to fit a GM180 auto as it was originaly made for a TH350 ..

also used a LOCAR floor mount bracket I got from a mate to mount the revised shifter on the trans tunnel .

Still a few amendments to make to the shifter but Im happy at this stage that it will work .

Great write up Ian. Unfortunatley the site is having s few issues over the weekend. The picture orentation seems to be down to how it was taken at the time. I've had similar issues !

Thanks for posting Ian,you haven't exactly had a good experience upon returning to the forum.
Please try and stick with it.

As John has said,a few issues over the weekend, don't know if someone was poking around in here to extract bugs gremlins and Emoji6's
But a few people managed to get a post up in-between outages.

And yes the dreaded picture orientation, all devices have a correct way up to take a photo, this website does not recognise device auto screen orientation.

If an existing photo needs turning it has to be edited slightly the right way up then reposted.
Yes its too much of a faf.
Yes you shouldn't have to do it.
And yes I shouldn’t have to keep typing this out all over the forum
its not those who are trying to post up pictures who are at fault.
Consider it success to get a photo up at all
    Please keep the thread going

Great stuff Ian and good to see you in theses parts! Crying shame this place has been allowed to rot or whatever's happened.

This past weekend's online difficulties are being discussed on Facebook, with committee input, but not even a mention here! Says it all really. Sad and annoying.

Bumper sticker - This is an historic vehicle and only has three speeds....... if you don't like this one you sure as hell won't like the others.

I do this too, works well, and easy, well, it must be, if I can do it!
I may live in East London, I may have a number plate that reads "Chopt",
but I do NOT use 6" wheel spacers!

taking advice re posting pics easier , will try and get a wee update sorted .. got cab and boor floor buttoned up and primered

continued with the seat riser which seem to have taken ages, they morphed from one design to another , settled on whats in the pics then took forever to sort them out with secure backing for the seat runner fixings .. Revised tge Mazda seat runners to suit with new locators .. its all worked out decent , seats are rock solid

Although they may not be compatible for IVA Ive shoosen to mount the seat belts on the rear quarter panel a bit like old 70s pagoda mercedes and BNW coupes 3litre csi? and others. Im a little low but tried to make things super strong in the hope common sense prevails and there seen to be suitable , I think there is a little leeway in Basic IVA for some things, seat belts might not be one , but im going to take the chance . Bit just in case im also building in the mountings for some inertia reel harnesses . that will be fine for IVA ..

The result is a massively strong rear quarter panel and a much stiffened body

panels are 2mm with a 2 mm backer for additional support .. welded into the rear bulkhead , inner wings B post and window apperture . . If they dont like it thats fine , its stffened up the shell so its still something..

also made a couple of alterations to the dash and added some demist vents and air deflectors ( aka 10mm solid bar welded on )

managed a few other odds and ends and brough the thing on a fair bit. I have a list of stuff I want to have buttoned up by the end of the week so best get the head down and the finger out ..
