    Unhappy I'm back

well got back from the Hotrod reunion in bowling green kentucky last tuesday and the pop had ran out of m.o.t while i was away, the front tyre's are shot so as i had a pair on the prodject that were new and not bing used i thought I had better swap em' over at home to save money cuz i'm brassic! plus you can't trust a KWIK CRAP FITTER not to chew up a rare 40 year old pair of fenton's !
Step 1.. strip off old tyre's

step 2... whack on new tyre

Step 3.... pump up tyre to a high pressure thn deflate to desired pressure add valve core and dust cap 1 JD !

PS forgot to mention before fitting tyre fit neeew valve's (thank's Russ)

Had a few post-build issues with mine, namely the radiator was spewing all its water out and it started making a chuffing noise under load which probably meant the headgasket was letting a bit past. Checked the torque on the head studs and all of them took between 1/4 turn to 1/2 turn to torque back up. Ran it up to temperature and boshed in a bottle of me old fave Wynns rad repair and took it out for a spin. seems to be cured and it's a fair bit quieter now.

    I'm back. Again

    Thumbs up

After not racing at Nostalgia Nationals due to oil leaks, then talking to Pete (Nutrocker) who mentioned a drip tray,i decided to knock this up ready for the Hotrod Drags (otherwise i'll forget!)

All 1 piece...folded up ready for welding the corners.....

..approx 3x7 inch....will bolt on the bottom of bell housing.

gonna get it on asap so i can see how many more i need make

I've been battling pre-ignition with this engine so I did a little experiment. I know to stop pre-ignition there are a few things you can do. Less timing advance, richer mixture or higher octane fuel. I already tried knocking a few degrees out the timing but I was struggling to get it to idle and it would splutter as you came off idle and got on the gas. I tried 97 octane fuel but the compression isn't high enough to merit this really. Didn't make any difference anyway.

I noticed the splutter disappears when the choke is on when it's cold so there must be a bit of mixture affecting this. I took about 6 degrees out the timing to roughly where I know where the knocking stops, this totally kills the idle so I had to wind the idle speed screw in to compensate. Optimum idle mixture is then when the idle speed is highest so I set it there. BIG splutter this time, as expected with the ignition that far back. Richened the idle mixture until the splutter went and wound the idle screw in more so it would sustain a good idle. Then took it out for a drive...

...absolutely ****** spot on! Right up on power, no knocking on the hills or at revs and it's a lot quieter and smoother. Who'd have thunked it eh? Celebrated by taking it out on the motorway and overtook some trucks. When I change the oil at the weekend I'll take it out and see how fast it goes.

Also won this for the twin carbs:

Twin choke cable off a Europa XS light aircraft. It was the only one I could find that had the 'right' look. Just got to win me that skanky Massey Ferguson +/- 60A ammeter and the dash will be complete

put my number plate back on today ready for the super nats......

    ...looks **** with it on

also re-mounted exhaust at rear,a bit too low for my liking but it does'nt touch the chassis everywhere now.
still got the headers to modify, yep,it touches there too,the only thing is it means taking the steering joints apart as it goes between the pipes.that'll have to wait for another day/weekend/YEAR lol!!!

still gotta make my rear panel presentable and maybe change the oil pump gasket as i suspect thats where im getting one of many leaks from.only got tomorrow and thursday after work to sort it as im gonna be at work loads next week.

Bad shout that one, it will waaste petrol and take ages to warm up, better bet is to get a new one 82c if u can find one and drill a coule of extra holes around the outside, say 3mm to allow the air to escape. do u have an overheating problem?

only slightly John.........5 times in all last weekend at the supernats and on the way home!
she gets warm quick anyway, also not running a heater.

the stat i had was an 82 and i checked if it worked, which it did.
i know Dez on here is 'stat less' and has no probs,so i'll give it a go.

So are either of you running the "heater hose" from the pump back into the rear of the manifold? on one of the other forums, V8 one of the guys mentioned slowing the flow down through this hose by fitting a 15mm blanking cap from domestic copper pipe into the hose with a small hole fitted, about3-4mm this has the same effect as a heater matrix and slows the flow of water though the heads allowing them to be cooled better !
